It’s that time of year again where even the most pious are tempted to have a little wager as the mass spectacle of horse racing insanity that is the Grand National rolls around again. With a huge field and bad weather the bookies just aren’t sure which way this is going to go and that means there’s plenty of opportunity to pick a winning bet on the Grand National before they get underway on Saturday afternoon.

  • Should you back one of the 150/1 outsiders to win this crazy race?
  • Will the weather make the race one of the slowest and toughest ever?
  • Can Blaklion improve on it’s fourth place finish of last year?
  • Who will take home the most coveted win on the racing calendar?

Unless you survive the impending nuclear apocalypse and eke out an existence in the irradiated wastelands of your former home as government regresses to localized warlords all vying with each other over resources you’re unlikely to see a real cavalry charge. Fortunately the dozens of thundering hooves and blurring mass of snorting muscle is in some way replicated by a horse races in the UK, and you can bet on the Grand National to have all the thrills without the danger of Mad Maxian thugs.

First run in 1839 this year this famous racing calendar milestone will see forty horses jumping thirty fences in a steeplechase stretching over four miles with a million pound prize purse at the end. It’s pell-mell pandemonium at the best of times and the traditional flutter of those who do not normally take advantage of UK gambling laws but can’t quite help but having a bet on the Grand National. Oh and this year the going will be heavy to slog, so you can expect that to add to the atmosphere of chaos.

Should You Back Lord Windermere At 50/1?

Bet On The Grand National

  • April 14th
  • Aintree Racecourse
  • 4 miles 512 yards
  • 30 Fences
  • 40 Horses
  • GBP purse

So just who should you back if you’re going to bet on the Grand National at Aintree this year? Well there’s plenty to choose from and with even the favorites barely garnering 10/1 even the bookies think this could be anyone’s race. Last year it was 14/1 shot One For Arthur which came home a winner, but who do we have in this year’s field? Well there are some great longshots, of course, with Alfie Spinner, Krackatoa King and Dancing Shadow all occupying the 150/1 zone and Henri Parry Morgan at 200/1.

There’s a good dozen horses at 100/1, odds that shouldn’t put you off a bet on the Grand National because stranger things have happened over the years, although it’ll perhaps be Rogue Angel at 66/1 worth an each-way consideration if you like to bet on sports in the UK but don’t want to back one of the front runners. Closer to reality we have Warriors Tale on 50/1 if you’re into that sort of thing, and Pleasant Company is back again to try it’s luck and at 33/1 isn’t the silliest wager you could place.

Of course at the top of the field and likely to make UK gambling news headlines on Sunday with their winning ride are horses like Ucello Conti on 20/1 (a better each-way wager you just won’t find) or Seeyouatmidnight, The last Samuri and Baie Des Iles all of whom are a 16/1 bet on the Grand National this Saturday. Minella Rocco gets a tempting on-the-nose 14/1, especially after last year, but with the going moist there’s a quartet of horses that are edging ahead in the betting odds by an obvious margin.

Blaklion and Anibale Fly both get 11/1 with the former having come fourth here last year and the latter being quite the surprise mover. You could do far worse than back either of those, but there are a couple of 10/1 shots (the shortest odds in the field of 40 remember) to consider if you want to go with the perceived wisdom. Total Recall has been winning some tough races and could only really be beaten by Tiger Roll who is a tricky beast to beat when it’s wet. Our tip? Captain Redbeard at 28/1, just because.
