Goodbye, Tesla Cybertruck: The End Of An Experiment

According to The New York Times, Tesla is preparing to wind down Cybertruck production in 2027. Elon Musk announced that production at Gigafactory Texas would slow down around midyear. The factory will instead accommodate increased Cybertruck production. This marks a significant change for a vehicle once presented as a cornerstone of Tesla’s future. Reality looked very different, though. Production started roughly two years behind the original schedule. Deliveries finally began in November 2023. Then came recalls, price shuffles, and a long slide in demand. Meanwhile, rivals kept improving their own electric trucks.

By the third quarter of 2026, Tesla sold just 8,295 Cybertrucks. For a line built for far bigger volumes, that number stings. So why call it an experiment? Because that’s really what the Cybertruck always was. Tesla tested stainless steel panels, giant castings, and steer-by-wire here. Some of those ideas worked surprisingly well. Others gave engineers years of real headaches. Wes Morrill, the truck’s lead engineer, framed the ending in a positive light. In his view, the Cybertruck lives on through the Cybercab. That’s a generous way to put it, but he has a point. On the bright side, it will always be a conversation starter. Few cars ever stirred up this much noise in such a short time. A Commercial Disappointment

I personally said goodbye to the Tesla Cybertruck the moment it was released. According to Mother Jones, the Cybertruck’s demise represents more than another discontinued vehicle. Its controversial design became closely associated with Elon Musk’s personal ambitions. The pickup initially attracted enormous attention through its futuristic appearance. However, public attention did not translate into sustainable consumer demand. Even rivals outsold it at times. Ford moved 27,307 F-150 Lightning trucks in 2025, according to Ford. Cox Automotive put Cybertruck sales at roughly 20,237 for the year. For a vehicle with Musk’s hype machine behind it, that hurts. Business Insider also reported a 68 percent year-over-year drop in late 2025.

Recalls didn’t help either. Tesla recalled thousands of trucks over issues like wiper motors and trim pieces. Another recall covered more than 27,000 trucks and their rearview cameras. Each headline chipped away at the apocalypse-proof image. Workers felt the slowdown as well. By early 2025, Tesla shifted some Cybertruck workers to the Model Y. Looking back, those were warning signs anyone could read. So yes, calling this a commercial disappointment feels fair. It’s not a total disaster, but it’s nowhere near the dream.

Goodbye, Tesla Cybertruck, But Why?

We saw many celebrities betting on Cybertrucks with their money. We watched a long line of celebrities put real money into Cybertrucks. Kim Kardashian proudly showed hers off on social media. Jay-Z and Beyoncé took delivery of one in February 2024. Justin and Hailey Bieber reportedly drove theirs to church. Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams and Jay Leno joined the club as well. Even Serena Williams cruised around in one with Alexis Ohanian. There’s a lesson here for anyone who follows the money. Celebrity purchases look like votes of confidence, but they often aren’t. Many stars buy cars for content as much as for driving.

A shiny new truck makes a great backdrop for a viral clip. Once the clip goes up, the truck’s job is mostly done. Meanwhile, Tesla counted on that buzz to replace traditional advertising. Without a real ad budget, the hype had to carry everything. It gave Tesla free marketing at exactly the right moment. Sadly for Musk, a sugar rush never lasts long. Hollywood moved on, and regular buyers never really showed up. That gap, more than anything, explains this goodbye.

Ford Will Take The Advantage

As we say goodbye to the Tesla Cybertruck, we can also say hello to Ford’s products. According to Ford Authority, the Cybertruck’s production troubles create an interesting opportunity for competing electric pickup manufacturers. Ford has already established its presence in the electric truck segment. Its F-150 Lightning demonstrated that traditional pickup designs could attract electric vehicle customers. The sales numbers back that up. In 2025, the Lightning outsold the Cybertruck by around 7,000 units. That’s a big deal for a supposedly boring design. Ford CEO Jim Farley even took a jab at Tesla a while back. He suggested the Cybertruck wasn’t a truck for people doing real work. Harsh, sure. Plenty of truck owners probably nodded along, though.

Ford has another card up its sleeve, too. A new midsize electric pickup will roll out of Louisville in 2027. It will ride on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform. Look at the calendar for a moment. Tesla stops Cybertruck production around mid-2027. Ford’s new trucks should arrive around that same window. Coincidence or not, Ford could hardly ask for better luck. Former Cybertruck fans who still want electric power need somewhere to go. A familiar F-150 badge might feel like a safe landing spot. Of course, Ford still has to execute well. Nobody wins by default in this market, and Ford knows that. Even so, the road ahead looks a lot clearer for the Blue Oval.

Goodbye, Tesla Cybertruck: What’s Next?

What will happen to Tesla now? Well, probably new products; they already have hints and ideas. Musk keeps talking about autonomy, robots, and artificial intelligence instead. Tesla wants to be known as an AI company first. Cybertruck simply doesn’t fit that story anymore. First up, the Cybercab takes center stage in Austin. This little two-seater has no steering wheel and no pedals. Tesla built the first production unit at Giga Texas in February 2026. Musk says buyers should get one for $30,000 or less by 2027. He also warned that early production would move “agonizingly slow.” Still, freeing up Cybertruck space suggests Tesla expects demand to grow. The robotaxi fleet needs vehicles, and lots of them. Personally, I find this pivot both exciting and a little risky.

Tesla built its name on cars that people wanted to drive. Now it wants people to ride, not drive. That’s a big leap for any brand, even this one. Musk also has a long history of missing his own deadlines. Robotaxis, for example, were once promised for 2020. Investors have learned to treat his timelines with a pinch of salt. Still, the Cybertruck taught Tesla some valuable lessons about manufacturing. Its castings and steer-by-wire tech won’t just disappear. If the Cybercab succeeds, this goodbye will look like a smart trade. Should it stumble, though, people might miss the Cybertruck more than expected.

Where To Bet On Elon Musk’s Companies?

Goodbye, Tesla Cybertruck, but your legacy will live on! The Elon Musk betting lines are far from over. The Cybertruck is leaving, yet Elon Musk betting lines are far from over. If anything, they keep multiplying every single month. Musk generates headlines almost daily, and bettors love that kind of chaos. Prediction markets lead the way for this type of wager. Kalshi and Polymarket both list dozens of Musk-related markets at any time. NBC News found 53 Musk markets on Polymarket and 46 on Kalshi. Only Donald Trump inspires more markets on these platforms. Interestingly, Musk’s own AI company, xAI, has integrations with both sites. He also posts about prediction markets fairly often on X. Before you jump in, a few practical tips can save you money.

First, read each market’s rules very carefully. Resolution sources matter, and the platforms sometimes settle disputes differently. Second, check whether these sites operate legally where you live. Rules vary a lot between countries and even between states. Third, set a budget and stick to it, no matter what Musk tweets. A single post from him can swing a market in minutes. Finally, treat this as entertainment rather than a retirement plan. Love him or loathe him, Musk keeps the betting world busy. The Cybertruck chapter might be closing, but the story isn’t. SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink, and Tesla will all generate plenty of new markets. Register with Bovada Sportsbook and bet on Tesla products!
