What’s Babylon About?

Babylon is a 2022 film directed by Damien Chazelle, who is best-known as director of La La Land and Whiplash. Both pictures became successful in the box office and received multiple awards. Babylon stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in leading roles with Tobey Maguire, Olivia Wilde, Phoebe Tonkin, Samara Weaving, and other Hollywood stars in supporting roles. Cast and directors are the two valid reasons why the world is waiting for Chazelle’s new drama-comedy movie, with its title referring to the capital city of the old Babylonian Empire and myths around it. The reference is here for a reason. The plot of Babylon focuses on the decline of old Hollywood during its transition from silent to sound films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7HT83wkVss&t=16s Following the director’s words, this is a story of several film stars in their rise and fall. Just like Babylonians, blinded by their desire to build the tower with its top in the sky and separated by the impossibility to speak the same language, some characters can’t cope with big ambitions and accept changes taking place in once ‘silent’ Hollywood.  The film will premiere in the US on December 23. Babylon box office predictions show that experts are different in their opinions about the movie success. Let’s see what online bookmakers in the US think about the film’s chances to become another Chazelle’s hit.

Babylon Box Office Predictions

As we have just mentioned, Babylon’s chances to perform well in the box office are still questionable. On the one hand, all previous Chazelle’s films did a good job at the box office. His Whiplash grossed $44 million with a $3 million budget. Oscar-winning La La Land earned over $447 million. First Man had a modest success, but still managed to bring $105 million to Universal Pictures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5muQK7CuFtY Taking a look at Damien Chazelle’s previous films, it would be fair to say that the public is loyal to most of his works. This fact plus a solid cast can attract people to cinemas on Christmas holidays. On the other hand, Christmas is not the best time for movies like Babylon that are not family friendly. What’s more, recent years haven’t been the best time for moviemakers in general, except for action & superhero movies. However, even they gross less than they used to, to say nothing about a $78 million drama-comedy from a young yet talented director.  On top of this, Babylon will be released just one week after James Cameron’s sequel to Avatar. The movie is predicted to break a couple of box office records and gross at least $2 billion in total. Chazelle’s chances to compete with a long-awaited sequel are minimal, so Babylon box office predictions state that the film won’t be his most successful in financial terms. Experts predict Babylon to gross around $5-6 million at the opening weekend. It is difficult to tell something about total revenue before the first weekend results, but bookies doubt that the three-hour-long movie will multiply or even reach its production budget.
