The United Kingdom’s Chesham and Amersham by-election is set for 17 June 2021. It has been triggered by the tragic death of Conservative MP Cheryl Gillan in April. The competing parties have selected their candidates. As per Chesham and Amersham by-election odds, Conservatives are the favorites. However, Lib Dems seem to have a strong chance of taking over.
The death of the sitting member, Dame Cheryl Gillan on 4 April 2021 triggered Chesham and Amersham by-election. As the Conservatives are the defending party, they are responsible for setting the date of the by-election. It was just confirmed that they have set 17 June 2021 for the by-election, according to Bucks Free Press.
Conservatives selected the businessman Peter Fleet as their candidate. Lib Dems picked Sarah Green to have her name on the ballot. What is more, the Greens have chosen Carolyne Culver to be their candidate. Most online sportsbooks in the United Kingdom suggest the race will likely be tight. Conservatives are standing as the favorites. Whereas, Lib Dems are the closest challengers to an upset.
Conservatives value as the favorite to retain the seat
The constituency has been a stronghold for the Conservatives since the creation of the seat in 1974. In December 2019 Cheryl Gillan comfortably won the election. However, the Conservatives’ majority declined compared to 2010, as per online sportsbook news in the United Kingdom.
Gillan sadly died over the Easter weekend following a long illness. Thus, the Conservatives had a selection process on 5 May with the businessman Peter Fleet securing an outright win. He lives in the constituency with his family and he has the best Chesham and Amersham by-election odds to retain the seat for Conservatives. He values 1.02 of winning at the 22BET Sportsbook.
Lib Dems have been significant challengers for decades
In the 2019 elections, Lib Dems finished a clear second. What is more, over the past three decades they have been the most significant challengers to the Conservatives. One of the main reasons is that the area has shown wide support to remain in the European Union. Therefore, at the 2019 EP Elections, the pro-EU Lib Dems were the most popular party.
A couple of weeks ago, Lib Dems have chosen the training and communications professional Sarah Green as their candidate. Many voices came out lately for an electoral alliance of the Lib Dems, Labour, and Greens. Yet, such efforts seemingly failed. Despite that, she still has a big chance of winning with 15 odds.
Another significant contender in the election race is Carolyne Culver, the candidate of the Greens, with 101 odds. However, it is hard to see the Greens winning over Lib Dems and the Conservatives.
