Only five clubs were part of it then and the team with the divine name Hallelujah FC won the first season. The football league system was renamed to K League in 1998. While in 2013 it was divided into two divisions. The top league got its current name of K-League 1 in 2018. The defending champion and already mentioned Jeonbuk Motors will start the league on Friday with a home game against Suwon Bluewings. Suwon finished only in 8th place last season but managed to win the FA Cup and compensated their fans for a disappointing season. We can find several Korean internationals in the home team along with Brazil, Dutch and Japanese players.  Their manager might be the most famous name, as Jose Morais worked before in the UK, in Greece and he was the assistant of Jose Mourinho for many years. The champions are the favorites to win their first game with the odds of 1.75.

They can’t have any foreign players this time.

Last season’s runner-up, Ulsan Hyundai will play on Saturday, hosting Sangju Sangmu, which is South Korea’s army team. All of its players are serving their compulsory military service and play at the club during this time. They can’t have any foreign players and they will be automatically relegated at the end of this season. Ulsan has made their squad even stronger with the signings of South Korean national team’s goalkeeper Cho Hyunwoo. And former Crystal Palace player Lee Chungyong has also joined the team. No surprise online sportsbooks in South Korea are predicting a home win with the odds of 1.65.

Other games at the weekends

Freshly promoted Gwangju FC will play against Seongnam FC which had its best period at the beginning of the 2000s. The club which won the first division 7 times, was relegated to the second tier in 2017 but returned back to the top league last season. Online gambling sites in South Korea are predicting a tough game, with high odds for all results.

According to the K-League 1 betting tips, an exciting game is expected between last season’s third and sixth-placed teams, FC Seoul and Gangwon FC. The team from the capital is one of the most successful teams in South Korea. They won six League titles so far, the last in 2016. They have slightly better odds with 2.50  to win away, but Gangwon can surprise them at home. Especially as they played one of the most creative football last year with scoring lots of goals. Their odds to win the game is 2.80 on bet365.
