The Man Who Skied Down Everest

The fascinating documentary is about the Japanese alpinist and skier Juichiro Miura and his team, who climbed Mount Everest in order to come down on skis, breaking a record. More precisely, only Miura pulled off the stunt. He skied 1,800 meters down the icy slope. He needed only three minutes to cover the distance of almost two kilometers and then continued his descent with a paraglider. The documentary film made in 1975 captures this act five years earlier. According to online gambling sites in Japan, he broke a few more records after that. For instance, he became the Guinness record holder of the oldest person to climb Everest at the age of 80 in 2013.

Best Extreme Sports Movies: Point Break

Although the enduring work featuring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves is an action film in terms of genre, many classify it as a work showing extreme sports due to the surfing backstory from 1991. Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and Johnson, the four former US presidents, commit the perfect heist in the history of Los Angeles. Of course, they are not real robbers, but the criminals used their masks when they robbed the vault.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcDD2-s4vWA An FBI agent suspects the gang among surfers in Southern California. Keanu Reeves, who plays an FBI agent who goes undercover to expose the robbers among the surfers, joins the group of young people who live on the beach, are athletic, and do not care about the law. He integrates into their midst and must learn to ride the waves so the gang won’t grow suspicious. The story has everything to keep you captivated until the end. Also, there is a 2015 adaptation with Luke Bracey and Édgar Ramírez.

Could You Survive the 127 Hours?

The story of Danny Boyle's 127 hours is probably already known to everyone who is even slightly interested in extreme sports. The focus of 127 hours is the true story of mountaineer Aron Ralston, portrayed by James Franco, who, after a rock slide, was trapped for five days, with a bottle of water and a sandwich, in the Blue John Canyon in the state of Utah, from which, despite the harsh conditions, he cannot escape because his right arm is immovable rock weighed down.  Who wins between man and nature? What can a person do when they fall victim to nature, are trapped, and face the hardest decisions? The biographical film drama deals with these questions, as well as the struggle and attitude in a life-threatening and hopeless situation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgFF-JBCHUg Aron's humor is intact as he jokingly comments on his near-death state to the camera, which is his only company. It plays as important a role in Aron’s 127 hours as Wilson, the volleyball, in Cast Away, where Tom Hanks's character, Chuck, gets stuck on a deserted island. It's a very interesting perspective of how far humans are willing to go when they fight for their lives.

Best Extreme Sports Movies: The Art of Flight

At the world premiere at the Beacon Theater in New York in 2011, the audience witnessed a historic moment as Art of Flight redefined the perception of snowboarding and extreme sports films. The aerial shots taken with the Cineflex V14 camera and the ultra-slow-motion shots of the Phantom HD Gold offer a view almost beyond reality. Among snowboarding records, many consider this to be the best of sports films.  Although visually, this is a film that could have been directed by David Attenborough’s cameraman, the movie is fun and has a lightness about it. The Art of Flight is a visual masterpiece that combines magnificent scenes from extreme sports with fascinating camera work. On the other hand, Art of Flight, with a budget of 2 million dollars, presents the beauty of culture, wildlife, and snowboarding from a new perspective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh29_SERH0Y&t=8s In addition to action scenes, the adventures experienced during the journeys and the dramatic situations play an equal role. The Darwin Mountains in Chile, the Tordrillo Mountains in Alaska, the Snake River Mountains in Wyoming, and the Andes and the Kootenay Mountains in British Columbia offer incredible surprises. You can never plan or know what will happen, but dangers are always around the corner. Nothing is Impossible: The Dawn Wall!

Rocks have been the center of Tommy Caldwell’s world since his childhood. He is a soft-spoken, quiet guy who conquers seemingly unclimbable rocks with fascinating concentration, precision, and above all, passion. Doing all this with two major events behind him will have your eyes glued to the screen watching one of the best extreme sports movies, with your jaw on the floor, asking whether this is a joke or not. Many people know the legendary rock of Yosemite National Park, El Capitan, from the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo. You can check it out at online gambling sites in Japan! Caldwell knows every square centimeter of the gigantic rock wall now, but before embarking on the big project, he completed all the existing climbing routes of El Cap. There was only one left: free climbing to get up the roughest, most challenging part of El Cap, the Dawn Wall, which seemed an impossible challenge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edfw9ip9sCQ Except for Caldwell. The guy planned the climb for several years, marked the route on the 915-meter high rock wall, and practiced, practiced, and practiced with Kevin Jorgeson, who was his climbing partner. The documentary tells the story of Caldwell and Jorgeson's nearly 3-week journey. We can see how they lived on the rock face, got through the most difficult sections, and how they handled and processed the mental challenges of the enormous task. This movie is simply beautiful, and not just because of the fantastic shots of the rock and Yosemite National Park but also because we get an actual representation of what passion, commitment, determination, will, and partnership mean. Even if you have never rock climbed before and do not plan to, you will still enjoy The Dawn Wall.

Man on Wire is One of the Best Extreme Sports Movies!

French high-wire walker Philippe Petit became famous in 1974 when he balanced on a 200-kilogram steel cable between the twin towers of the World Trade Center under construction. The stunt organized illegally, four hundred meters high, lasted 45 minutes and attracted the attention of the world press. It went down in history as the most beautiful artistic crime of the 20th century. He turned around eight times, holding the twenty-five-kilogram balancing pole.  He walked, danced, and lay down several times and also knelt down to show his respect for the towers while police officers tried in vain to order him down. In 2008, they immortalized the dizzying act in a documentary, Man on Wire, which is about preparing for the crazy tightrope walking between the Twin Towers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWHZLRmu1ts During the film, people involved in the stunt tell how they planned the dangerous act. In 2009, the piece received the BAFTA Award for Best Movie and the Academy Award for Best Documentary.  The Walk, the 2015 movie adaptation, was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who based the movie on Petit's book of the same title. Most of the film, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is about the preparation, the complications, and overcoming the doubts that appear in the main character. It’s a great representation of mental strength and how people overcome their fears to accomplish their dreams and leave their mark! Of course, it could have ended differently because extreme sports deaths occur sometimes!

The Deeper Trilogy

It is enough to go to the mountains once to become addicted to winter sports and the atmosphere for life. Some people’s connection to the mountains is stronger and unique than others, and there is no quitting. Jeremy Jones is undoubtedly one of them. He and his friends are looking for untouched areas of the world's biggest and most challenging mountains. They search for mountain slopes and lines that neither snowmobiles nor helicopters can reach, and they can only approach them by relying on human power.

Jeremy meets the biggest challenges of his life, like climbing all night, camping on a mountain peak at -30 Celsius, daily 20 km walks in the snow, and, of course, fantastic slopes, rocks, and couloirs! The biggest athletes in snowboarding, such as Travis Rice or Xavier de la Rue, also make an appearance in the film! By the way, they did not use harmful substances while filming because Teton Gravity Research would like to draw attention to the importance of protecting our environment so that we can spend as many beautiful winters as possible in nature.

Further and Higher

Two years after the release of Deeper, Jones takes the big mountain experience to remote, unknown places and terrain. Continuing the 2010 film, he embarks on his next epic project: Further. He believes the way up the mountain is just as important as the descent. One thing is for sure, anyone who has climbed a mountain in order to slide down knows how much more the experience we worked hard for is worth than when the heated ski lift takes us up to the top in a few minutes. You may only slide down once that day, but it feels completely different. As a result of his mission and respect for the sport and nature, Jones received the Adventurer of the Year award from National Geographic in 2013.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4c2nAl0jew In Higher, the third and final part of his snowboarding trilogy, which aired in 2024, Jones tries to showcase the many wonders of nature at his favorite spots closer to home, such as Jackson Hole and Lake Tahoe. Then he conquered the farthest places. He also made history by being the first to descend the eastern side of the Alaskan mountains and the Nepalese part of the Himalayas. This fascinating trilogy is definitely among the best extreme sports movies ever and serves as a great inspiration to watch and even bet on snowboarding competitions, which you can do at Bet365 Sportsbook!

One of the Best Extreme Sports Movies - Deep Love

The Polish documentary titled Deep Love reflects the story perfectly. Imagine a man in his fifties who has survived a stroke but can’t speak properly anymore, and the right side of his body is paralyzed, while Janusz is mentally intact. Now imagine the same guy before his stroke, who was a sharp-witted lawyer, determined, tough, and healthy. Also, he was a diver. Not a hobby diver who looks at the fish near the surface, but a diver who teaches underwater combat to the Polish army. For instance, in Norway, in Lake Baikal, and in dozens of other places, he dove to 150-160 meters deep.  He was in his element underwater. It was his life. Then comes the stroke, and Janusz's life is no longer about diving but about how to learn to live again. Though, diving is what motivates him not to give up. Then, the depth calls again. The title perfectly expresses not only Janusz's passion for diving and the deep but his partner, Aisa’s deep love for him too. It’s a beautiful and heart-wrenching story about extreme sports, love, loss, passion bigger than fear, and unbelievable strength. Don’t miss out on one of the best extreme sports movies, and find more of the most inspiring sports films based on true stories!
