Who will win the Diamond League trophies 2016 on the IAAF Weltklasse meeting in Zürich?

The Rio Olympic Games might be over, but the athletic excitement in the IAAF Diamond League continues. The last two meeting for this year are in front of us, starting with the Weltklasse meeting on the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich today and ending with the meeting in Brussels. As internet betting sites in EU note, 14 champions of the Rio Olympics will be present in Switzerland today making the Zurich meeting a shorten “one night athletic Olympics”. The fight for the Diamond trophies might beign!

Who are the probable new champions in the Diamond League?

39 athletes are able to win a Diamond Trophy in Zurich today. Renaud Lavillenie in pole vault, Dafne Schippers at the 200m race, Kendra Harrison at the 100m hurdles race, Ivana Spanovic in long jump and Sandra Perkovic in discus, already finished their jobs in the previous meetings. They are 20 or more points ahead of the second placed athletes in their discipline which means that will only need to formally appear in Zurich and receive their Diamond Trophy this year.

A special mention here deserves the Diamond trophy winning serie of Sandra Perkovic. The young Croatian discus thrower will win her fifth consecutive Diamond trophy marking an absolute domination in this discipline. She also comes in Zurich as an Olympic Champion from Rio 2016, where she defended her Olympic title from London four years earlier. On the other side Ivana Spanovic will become the first Serbian athlete in history to win a Diamond Trophy.

• Perkovic is one of the most successful women athletes in the history of the Diamond League

• Caster Semenya to fight for the Diamond trophy

• Ivana Spanovic: first Serbian Diamond League trophy winner

Three other athletes are also close to the Diamond League trophy this year. LaShawn Merritt at the 400m race , the Spanish Ruth Beitia in high jump and the American Christian Taylor in triple jump have already made a considerable difference in points in front of their greatest opponents that is very likely that will confirm their Diamond trophies on the upcoming Zurich meeting.

The battles for Diamond League trophies in Zurich

Unlike the more or less already known Diamond League trophy winners there are several disciplines which will definitely offer a nail-biting excitement. If you are a betting fan, then feel free to bet on sports in Switzerland, as these events are not going to let you with indifference. The women’s 1500 m competition is certainly one such event. Here Faith Kipyegon has eight points and one victory more than the second Laura Muir. In case she wins in Zurich she will win the trophy, but if Muir wins then the trophy will travel to Scotland.

An especially attractive duel of the night will be the one between Caster Semenya and Francine Niyonsaba in the 800m race. The difference between them is only two points so whoever wins the race in Zurich wins the Diamond League trophy in the end. Semenya succeed to win the Olympic final in Rio with 0.39 seconds ahead of Niyonsaba. Will that be the case in Zurich is something difficult to predict.
