Even though there is no set date yet for the 74th Tony Awards, all nominees have been announced in the categories. One of the most prestigious awards in the theatre world recognizes the best Broadway productions and performances of last season. In the Tony Awards 2020 winner odds we can find Alanis Morissette’s rock musical and a play about interracial relationships.
The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre or as more known, the Tony Award is an annual ceremony. Where awards are given to the best Broadway productions and performances. It is the highest US theatre award. An equivalent of the Academy Awards for film or the Grammy Awards for music. There are 26 categories ranging from the Best Performances by a Leading Actor/Actress to technical categories like Best Costume Design or Best Sound Design. We can find the same categories in the two most popular productions, musicals and plays. This year the award will be held virtually, with no set date given so far. But the nominees have been announced already, let’s see the favorites.
The Tony Awards 2020 winner odds favor Jagged Little Pill in Best Musical
The favorite of online sportsbooks in the US in the Best Musical category is the rock musical with Alanis Morissette’s music, Jagged Little Pill. The title was named after the Canadian singer’s 1995 album of the same name. Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody brought her music to the stage, it debuted at the Broadway last November. So no surprise that the musical became a huge success. The story is fictional and not based on Morissette’s life, but it takes on several big issues. Like sexual assault, opiodic addition and gender issues, just to main a few. But in spite of these serious topics, Jagged Little Pill is highly entertaining and has the odds of 1.65 to win the award.
Another nominee, which has a lot to do with a famous singer is Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. It has the odds of 6.50 in the Tony Awards 2020 winner odds. Obviously it tells the story of rock legend Tina Turner from the beginning of her career to her transformation to a star. Featuring her music and most famous songs, the story line is not as strong as the other rivals. The third nominee is Moulin Rouge! The Musical which is based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film. It also brings spectacular and energetic scenes to the stage, though the main performances are not so powerful. It has already won the Best Musical award at the 2019 IRNE Awards, now it has the odds of 2.75 to win the Tony as well.
Slave Play is the favorite in Best Play category
Slave Play, a three-act play about race, sex and interracial relationships has become the most nominated play with 12 nominations in the history of the awards. The play tries to uncover current racism and how slavery still has an impact on black people’s lives. Though there has been controversy about its themes, and a petition to shut it down, most critics liked it. Online gambling sites in the US also predict it to win the Best Play award with the odds of 2.25.
The novel Howards End inspired another favorite in the category, The Inheritance. It is a portrait of 21st century gay men in search of their collective past. The play premiered in London and won several awards including the 2019 Olivier Awards but it wasn’t such a success in New York. It is a question how the 784 designated Tony voters will like it and if it can win the Tony Award too.
