VIP Gambling in Macau Dropped by Almost 40% in 2015

In 2015, VIP gambling in Macau dropped by 39.9% according to the Macau Gaming Inspection.

The VIP casino gambling in Macau was the main contributor to Macau gaming revenues with 80% percent at its peak. However, after the VIP gambling in Macau dropped by almost 40% percent in 2015, this figure fell back to MOP127.82 billion ($15.9 billion), a 50% contribution.

The reason behind the drop in Macau VIP gambling could be China’s economic slowdown. This trend was triggered by the anti-corruption crackdown in China.

Other sectors beside VIP gambling in Macau dropped too

Macau gaming authorities reported that gross gaming revenue from the mass market also dropped. The decline is 25.9% compared to 2014, and the income was MOP103.02 billion.

Total gross gaming revenues in Macau in 2015 dropped by 34.4% to MOP230.84 billion. This is the worst trend since land based and online gambling in Macau was liberalized in 2003.
