Jordan Burroughs will look to add another Olympic gold medal to his resume in Rio, and if successful, could be in the discussion as the best American wrestler of all time.

Burroughs began wrestling at the age of five. None of this family had ever wrestled, but he decided to give it a shot after discovering a wrestling flyer at his school. He was a small child, unable to play sports such as football and basketball, but it didn’t take him long to find success in wrestling. “I was super tiny growing up, a late bloomer in terms of physical development, but I didn’t have to be big to excel.” He said.

In high school, Burroughs became a state and senior national champion. He was given a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska, where he quickly established himself as one of wrestling’s brightest young stars. During his junior year, Burroughs competed at 157 pounds and was an undefeated national champion. He eventually moved up to 165 pounds and once again went undefeated as a champion. He was extremely talented, but not many predicted he would be in the discussion for the best American wrestler of all time.

Burroughs shines in the Olympics

Jordan Burrough’s first major success in international competition came at the 2011 World Wrestling Championship in Istanbul. Jordan competed at 74kgs and defeated all five of his opponents to win the gold medal.

The next year, Burroughs competed in the 2012 Olympic Games, once again going undefeated and making US gambling news by winning the freestyle wrestling gold medal. It was this event that wrestling experts really began to question whether Burroughs could be considered the best American wrestler of all time. Some other top choices in that discussion include Cael Sanderson, John Smith, and Dan Gable.

Burroughs is now set to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, and another gold medal would surely help his chances to be considered one of the greatest wrestlers in US history.
