Sports Betting in Jamaica
Sports betting is one of the few betting activities legal for Jamaican citizens. Popular events in include football and horse racing, and as of 2010 there were roughly 300 licensed betting shops, which are visited by both locals and foreign tourists.
In 2010 a law was passed allowing the state horse racing promoter to take 60 percent of net revenue from bookmakers in return for a fixed commission. Bookmakers have complained that the measure has hurt their profitability.
Online Sports Betting in Jamaica
The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission issues licenses to online sportsbook operators. Some Jamaican sites are The Greek and Bet Jamaica. These sites accept wagers on a variety of sports including football, horse racing, basketball, baseball and American football.
Online sportsbooks are legally prohibited from accepting bets from Jamaican citizens. However, it is reported that many Jamaicans use online gambling sites illegally. The government is considering regulated online betting in order to raise tax revenue.
