Gambling in Rwanda
For many years, gambling laws in Rwanda were almost non-existent. In 2011, the government decided to change this by enacting Law No. 58. These new laws created a legal framework to license and oversee gambling activities across the country.
In 2013, the Rwanda Gambling Board was created to further oversee gambling activities in Rwanda. This regulatory board aims to tighten gambling conditions and protect consumers from losing money. The Gambling Board also receives annual tax revenues from gambling operators.
The most popular form of gambling in Rwanda is unquestionably sports betting. The country has a long history of sporting traditions, and many people here enjoy watching and betting on a variety of sports.
Online Gambling in Rwanda
The new Rwandan gambling laws of 2011 and 2013 have also created a legal framework for online gambling websites to operate in the country. 4G internet was introduced to Rwanda in 2013, opening up many new opportunities for internet gambling sites to exist here.
Online gambling sites are eligible to apply for a license to operate, but as of June 2016, no sites are currently running in Rwanda. It is still possible to gamble online here, and a number of great websites allow Rwandan players.
