  • 2021 Volta a Catalunya takes place this week, between 22-28 March
  • The race has seven stages, ending on Sunday in Barcelona
  • 2019 runner-up Adam Yates is the biggest favorite ahead of his brother and teammate

After the thrilling race of the 2021 Milan-San Remo, cyclist fans are not left without great races as the UCI Tour goes to Spain this week. The Catalan tour takes place between the 22nd and 28th of March finishing in Barcelona on Sunday. In the 2021 Volta a Catalunya odds Adam Yates is the biggest favorite who was the runner-up in the last race. But he won’t have an easy job against his brother and other top cyclists.

This is a very special edition of the Volta a Catalunya as the race celebrates its 100th birthday in 2021. The first race was held in 1911 making the Volta a Catalunya the fourth-oldest cycling race of the world. It is also one of three UCI events held in Spain beside the Vuelta and the Tour of the Basque Counry. We can find mostly Spanish cyclists in the previous winners with legendary Eddy Merckx and Miguel Hindurain also winning here. Columbian Miguel Angel Lopez won here in 2019 while the race was postponed last year. But now it’s back with most UCI WorldTour teams taking part in it with their top cyclists.  Like Joao Almeida, Adam Yates and Geraint Thomas who all belong to the top favorites.

2021 Volta a Catalunya odds favor the 2019 runner-up

Ineos rider Adam Yates finished as a runner-up in the 2019 Volta a Catalunya after winning stage 3 in the tournament. The twin brother of the 2018 Vuelta winner Simon Yates hasn’t won any Grand Tour yet. But he has some victories from other tournaments. Like from the Tour of Turkey which he won in 2014. Or the UAE Tour where he got the victory last year. He also raced there this year and finished second behind Tadej Pogacar. Now online sportsbooks in Spain offer him the smallest odds, 3.00 to win in Catalunya.

Let’s race!

His brother, Simon Yates will also be here though and can make life difficult for Adam. They ride in different teams with Simon currently racing for Team BikeExchange. Beside winning the Vuelta in 2018, he has also won numerous stages at the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France. And he was the winner of the 2020 Tirreno-Adriatico too. Last week Yates only finished 10th in the race though after lacking his top form. Now the British rider can aim for a better result with the odds of 7.50 to win the race. The 2021 Volta a Catalunya odds also mention Geraint Thomas in the favorites with the odds of 19.00. The 2018 Tour de France winner hasn’t raced too much last year but he is getting back to form slowly. He can be a key member in the Ineos team at this tournament and help his teammates during the race.

Previous winners and other GC riders can also win in strong field

There are several other great riders in the starting list like another Ineos rider, Richard Carapaz. Who will make his debut of the 2021 season here. The Ecuadorian rider won the 2019 Giro d’Italia and finished as runner-up in the 2020 Vuelta. Now Carapaz can start his preparation for this year’s Tour de France in this race which may favor him with its demanding route. Online gambling sites in Spain offer the odds of 7.00 for his victory.

While one of the big talents of the sport, Portuguese Joao Almeida is also expected to perform well in Catalonia. The Quick-Step rider finished 4th in last year’s Giro after wearing the pink jersey for 15 days. He also started this year in great form. As Almeida finished 3rd in the UAE Tour and 6th in the Tirreno-Adriatico. Now his odds to win here is 12.00 on bet365. We can also mention the former winners of the Volta in the favorites. Like Richie Porte (11.00) or Nairo Quintana (23.00) but the 4th victory of Alejandro Valverde would be a small miracle (81.00) though.
