The Beginnings of Cyclo-cross

Originally, a French soldier invented the sport as an alternative to riding. They have organized Cyclo-cross competitions since 1902 but acknowledging it as a sport came later, in 1910. That was when a Tour de France winner participated and drew attention to the new activity. They organized the first Cyclo-cross world championship in 1950, which is the date we consider the start of this professional cycle sport. Since the 70s, the Benelux Countries and the US have become the main competition organizers, but you can check out the list at online sportsbook sites in Luxemburg!

The Cyclo-cross competitions take place on 2-4 kilometers long circular race course tracks. It can be either a dirt road or a grassy and muddy area. The race course contains barriers like run-ups, wooden plank barriers, flyovers, and knee-deep muddy, sandy parts. The reason for the various obstacles is that the participants break their momentum, test their skills, or not freeze during winter competitions in negative degrees Celsius. In a Cyclo-cross race, besides the spectacular barriers, the strength, technical knowledge, and cycling skills matter the most.

Usually, these competitions take place in autumn and winter. The short rounds, around 60 minutes, are fast-paced, and due to the seasons, the tracks are often covered in mud or snow, making the races even more exciting. The competitors can switch bikes every round, but it takes extra seconds. However, it might be worth the trouble in the long run since a clean bike can handle more than a muddy one. These are the basics you need to know as an introduction to the 2022 Cyclo-cross challenge betting guide!

The Competition

Like most cycle competitions, participants start at the same time at Cyclo-cross, and the winner is who crosses over the starting line first in the last lap. Competitors must complete the number of laps specified during the competition. Usually, this means approximately one hour in terms of duration for men.

Of course, the recommended competition times vary depending on the category. As we have already mentioned, this cycling type requires special skills, so the riders have to handle the bike excellently in all conditions as fast as possible.

Of course, it is also worth all cyclers to try Cyclo-cross in the off-season, which is in the autumn and winter months. It can greatly improve certain skills. For example, road cyclists can develop their bicycle handling skills to a very high level, which is helpful in their races, but riders with wide tires can further refine their cornering technique and practice getting on and off the bike quickly. Not to mention that it is fun and can brighten up the dull winter months even if you don’t race but bet at Bet365 Sportsbook!

2022 Cyclo-Cross Challenge Betting Guide

If you are thinking about betting, it is significant to clarify what a barrier is according to the rules of the International Cycling Federation first. It is a section of the track that may but not necessarily forces the riders to get off their bikes. So, some riders can’t complete the obstacles without getting off the bike, while there may be some exceptionally skilled cyclists who can get through those parts of the course on the bike.

There are artificial and natural obstacles. An example of this is the sand pit. In some places, on the beach or riverbank, the sand pits are natural formations, while they have to install elsewhere. The rule even states that there can be a maximum of six artificial obstacles on a racetrack, but there is no limit for natural ones. It is significant to mention in the 2022 Cyclo-cross challenge betting guide that the length of each barrier can last for a maximum of 80 meters, their height 40 cm, and a maximum of 10% of the track can be an obstacle.

After all, this is logical since 90% of the track must be appropriate for riding. There are plenty of obstacles on the way which slow down the competitors, but the rules don’t count them as barriers. For example, think about the ground of the track in rainy weather! The mud can make racing quite hard for cyclists, but the rules do not call it an obstacle. Likewise, neither the turns that are an integral part of the Cyclo-cross course can break the pace.

Types of Barriers

One of the typical obstacles is the plank. Everyone who has seen a Cyclo-cross race must have encountered it. For those who don’t know it, it is a long board across the track, where competitors either step or jump over it. According to the regulations, the double plank also counts as one obstacle. The UCI determine their size and material since they cannot cause injury or have sharp edges.

Their maximum height is 40 cm, and between the two planks, there is a minimum of 4-6 meters. Experienced competitors can jump over them without any problems, although it is always questionable whether it is worth it on the given track or is faster. The next obstacle is the sand pit. The organizers dig it up before the races to slow down competitors sufficiently. They must be a minimum of 40 and a maximum of 80 meters long and 6 meters wide.

The courses may contain bridges as obstacles, which must be at least three meters wide with safety rails on both sides. To avoid accidents, these bridges should have anti-slip covers. These obstacles may cross another section of the course, so it is not only a spectacular element but also a practical solution. By the way, you can also meet such bridges at XCO races.

2022 Cyclo-Cross Challenge Betting Guide

Cyclo-cross races often seem chaotic in the first round. It often happens that competitors get stuck, fall, or damage their bikes. It always takes a little time to restore order. The rules also minimize confusion and the number of mass crashes after the start so that the better, stronger, and more skilled competitors can take the lead sooner. So, it is crucial to regulate two things: the finish line and the starting procedure.

It goes without saying that in a spacious start-finish line, the competitors can fit in comfortably and overtake more easily. Moreover, in case of a fall, they do not necessarily have to wait for those lying on the ground in front of them. It is important to acknowledge in the 2022 Cyclo-cross challenge betting guide that the rules state that the start and finish line must be at least six meters wide and 150 meters long to ensure enough space for the riders.

There are two more significant rules regarding the start against those who want to gain an unjustified advantage. Anyone who starts earlier than the starting gun goes off or the whistle sounds will be disqualified. The competition ends quickly for cheaters. In addition, those who await the start by holding on to something without one foot down will have to start from the back. It is not fair to the other competitors if someone is ready to start with both feet on the pedal while the others still have one foot on the ground.

Pay Attention to Detail

Watching the Cyclo-cross races, no one could fail to notice that they do not tell the competitors how many laps they have to complete before the race. They reveal it during the race. There are recommended race times based on the average time of the first two laps of the competitor leading the race. It may sound a bit complicated, so we will give an example.

The leader in the elite men’s race completed the first two laps in an average of eight minutes, and the recommended race time in this category is 55-60 minutes, so it will be seven laps, 7×8=56. The judges always announce at the beginning of the third round how many rounds the winner has to complete. What else should you know about the 2022 Cyclo-cross challenge betting guide?
