  • 2022 UCI Road World Championship is held between 18-25 September in Australia
  • The men’s road race will be the last event this Sunday
  • Van Aert, Pogacar, and van der Poel are the biggest favorites to win the rainbow jersey

The last event of the 2022 UCI Road World Championship will be the men’s road race on Sunday. Some of the best cyclists will fight for the rainbow jersey from Tadej Pogacar to Mathieu van der Poel. But the defending champion Julian Alaphilippe and three-time world champion Peter Sagan will also go for the victory. The 2022 Road Race World Championship odds favor the Belgian star, Wout Van Aert but almost anyone can win the race.

The 2022 UCI Road World Championship takes place in Wollongong, Australia between 18-25 September. Fans could already see a surprise win in the men’s time trial event where Norwegian Tobias Foss won ahead of the big favorites. Well, it’s not very likely to see a similar result in the men’s road race on Sunday with so many top-class riders in the field. From the two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar to the 2022 Vuelta winner Remco Evenepoel.

Former world champions and medalists, like Peter Sagan, Michael Matthews, and Matteo Trentin can also perform well. Just like the two-time defending champion, Julian Alaphippe.  The route is 166,2 miles long and it includes some climbs but no cobblestones this time.

Van Aert and Pogacar Are Head-to-head In the 2022 Road Race World Championship Odds

Wout Van Aert won the Green jersey at the 2022 Tour de France after winning three stages and assisting his teammate, Jonas Vingegaard to the overall victory. The Belgian also won three one-day classics this season besides finishing as a runner-up in the Paris-Roubaix.

He managed to keep his good form as he won the Bretagne Classic Quest last month. Van Aert will arrive fresh after skipping the time trial race in this year’s world championship. It was a surprising decision following his two former silver medals in the event. But he just wanted to focus on the road race now where he is the favorite to win with an odds of 4.33.

But online sportsbooks in Australia offer the same odds for the victory of Tadej Pogacar in their 2022 Road Race World Championship odds. The Slovenian has just won a race in Montreal ahead of Van Aert which can be a promising sign ahead for this race.

Pogacar couldn’t win his third Tour de France title this summer but he is still one of the best riders of the young generation. He also won this year’s Strade Bianche and the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race. While Pogacar was sixth in the time trial race here last Sunday. Now he can go for the gold medal and become the first Slovenian cyclist to wear the rainbow jersey.

Chances of Van der Poel, Evenepoel, and former champions

Mathieu van der Poel also achieved some great results this season. Like winning the one-day classics of the Tour of Flanders and Dwars door Vlanderen. He also won a stage in this year’s Giro d’Italia and wore the pink jersey for three stages. The Dutch cyclist finished eighth last season in the world championship, now he can get a better result.

Though winning against the Belgian duo and Pogacar might prove to be too difficult. But it still has an odds of 5.25 on bet365. As Van Aert can work together with his compatriot, Remco Evenepoel in the race. The young Belgian won his first Grand Tour, 2022 Vuelta a Espana two weeks ago.

He will arrive full of confidence and great form. Though tiredness might affect his performance this weekend. Or not, as his bronze medal in the time trial race last Sunday proved it. Online gambling sites in Australia offer an odds of 7.50 for his win in the road race. The defending champion, Julian Alaphilippe has been very unlucky this season.

After recovering from his injury, he caught Covid, then crashed out in the Vuelta. The French champion will still try to win the title for the third time in a row.  An achievement only reached by Peter Sagan so far. The Slovakian champion will also compete in the event but his form hasn’t been that great either this year. His odds to win his fourth title are 67.00.
