  • 2022 Tour of the Basque Country is held this week, 4-9 April
  • Primoz Roglic won the race last year and he is the top favorite again
  • Jonas Vingegaard and Quick-Step rider Remco Evenepoel follows him as favorites

The challenging tournament of the Basque Country is taking place this week, between the 4th and 9th of April. Several top cyclists will compete in the tour including the defending champion, Primoz Roglic. The 2022 Tour of the Basque Country winner odds mentions the Slovenian as the top favorite ahead of other great contenders. Like Remco Evenepoel, Adam Yates, and Dani Martinez.

Following the Flanders Classics, cycling fans can follow the 6-day stage race of the Tour of the Basque Country. Or as it’s also called the Itzulia Basque Country. This is the 61st edition of the race which has been a part of the UCI World Tour since 2008. It also means that some of the best cyclists will compete from WorldTour teams like Jumbo-Visma, Ineos, and Bora. While Basque fans will hope for a good performance from the local team, Euskaltel. Primoz Roglic won the tournament last year which was his second victory. Other former winners include Nairo Quintana, Alberto Contador and Alejandro Valverde. The 2022 edition will cover 882 km through six stages, consisting of steep climbs. Roglic leads after the first individual time trial stage, but it’s still a long way until the finish line in Eibar.

Roglic leads the 2022 Tour of the Basque Country Winner Odds

Primoz Roglic is a two-time winner of the Basque race following his wins in 2018 and 2021. It’s a perfect challenge for the mountain specialist who got his biggest successes at the Spanish Grand Tour, the Vuelta. He won the Spanish Grand Tour three times in a row between 2019 and 2021. Roglic won the 2022 Paris-San Remo this season but only finished 17th in the Milan-San Remo one-day classics. Now he will have a much better chance of winning according to online sportsbooks in Spain. They offer the odds of 1.50 for his third overall victory in the event.

His teammate, Danish Jonas Vingegaard can be a big help again just like last year when the two of them managed to work over Pogacar. Vingegaard is also mentioned in the top favorites by the 2022 Tour of the Basque Country winner odds. He was the runner-up in last year’s race just like in the 2022 Tirreno-Adriatico. The 25-year-old cyclist got his biggest achievement in the 2021 Tour de France when he also finished second behind Pogacar in the overall standings. Very impressive results from the Jumbo-Visma rider who has the odds of 5.50 to win in Northern Spain now.

Evenepoel, Yates, and Vlasov in Other Favorites

In the absence of Tadej Pogacar, the Quick-Step duo of Remco Evenepoel and Julain Alaphilippe can be the biggest threat to the Jumbo riders. Evenepoel won this season’s Volta ao Algarve and finished second in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. But he wasn’t too successful in the one-day classics. The young Belgian started well this tour though after finishing only 5 seconds behind Roglic in the first stage. His odds to finish on top on Saturday are 11.00.

Alaphilippe missed this season’s Flander Classics and will concentrate on the Ardennes Classics. He did race though on the 2022 Tirreno-Adriatico along with Evenepoel but only finished 41st there. Surely the French world champion will aim for a better result on this tour. But his chances of winning are not too good with the odds of 50.00.

The Ineos team will also bring a strong team to the tournament with Adam Yates, Dani Martinez, and Geraint Thomas all in the line-up. Yates finished behind Pogacar in the 2022 UAE Tour and finished fourth at the Paris-Nice. While his best result in the Tour of the Basque Country has been a 4th-place finish. Martinez seems to be in great form this season after finishing third in the 2022 Paris-Nice. Online gambling sites in Spain offer the odds of 17.00 for both cycyclistsin.

The Bora team will also try to get a good result in a so-far disappointing season. Their first overall WorldTour victory was achieved by Sergio Higuita who won the Volta a Catalunya last month. Now he will ride along with his teammates, Aleksandr Vlasov and Emanuel Buchmann. With the Russian cyclist having the best odds, 23.00 on 22Bet to get the win.
