  • 2022 WTA German Open is held between 13-19 June in Berlin
  • Liudmila Samsonova won the first event on the grass here last year
  • Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka are the top favorites this time

The 2022 WTA Tour continues this week in Berlin, with the 2022 German Open, held between the 13th and 19th of June. Russian Liudmila Samsonova is the defending champion who will play in this year’s event. Along with several top 20 players from Ons Jabeur to Maria Sakkari. But the 2022 WTA Berlin winner odds mention the 2022 French Open finalist, Coco Gauff as a top favorite ahead of them.

The first German Open was held in 1896 so it is one of the oldest tournaments for women. Until 1978 Hamburg hosted the event which was moved to Berlin (West Berlin) the following year. It was played on clay until 2008. Following a 10-year-break the tournament returned last year but it has been held on grass now.

Russian Liudmila Samsonova is the defending champion after beating Swiss Belinda Bencic last year. Both of them will take part in the competition again along with several other top players. Like the world No4 Ons Jabeur who is the top seed of the event. And world No5 Aryna Sabalenka who won in Berlin the doubles tournament last year. But American Coco Gauff is the bookmakers’ favorite after her great performance in the French Open.

2022 WTA Berlin Winner Odds Favor Gauff and Jabeur

18-year-old Coco Gauff reached her first Grand Slam final last month at the 2022 French Open and moved to 13th place in the world rankings. She knocked out Kaia Kanepi, Elise Mertens, Sloane Stephens, and Martina Trevisan on her way to the final. Where she was defeated by the world No1, Iga Swiatek in two straight sets.

It was still a remarkable performance from the young American who is the top favorite to win the German Open this week. Online sportsbooks in Germany offer the odds of 7.40 for her victory. Of course, it won’t be an easy task as Gauff is likely to meet world No7 Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-final.

We can find on the same path the top seed of the tournament, Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian is the highest-ranked player (world No4) in the field. With an odds of 8.00 to win her third WTA Tour title. Jabeur became the first African player to win a WTA 1000 event with her victory in Madrid.

While she also reached the final of the 2022 Italian Open. In Paris, the 27-year-old was already out in the first round after a shocking defeat from Polish Magda Linette. She can bounce back now in Berlin where she will start against Czech Karolina Muchova. The  2022 WTA Berlin winner odds also mention the world No5, Aryna Sabalenka as the top favorites. The Belarusian hasn’t had the best season so far but she reached the final in the Netherlands last week.

Sakkari, Kasatkina, and last year’s finalists

Maria Sakkari continued her great form this year and reached the final in Indian Wells and Doha. She was defeated both times by Iga Swiatek, but the Greek player still reached her career-high ranking No3. Sakkari got to the quarter-final in Nottingham last week and will face a qualifier in the first round.

Sakkari’s odds to go all the way and get her second title are 10.00. We can find in the same part of the draw Darya Kasatkina, the sixth seed of this year’s event. The best Russian women player got to the semi-final at the 2022 French Open. Besides having three further semi-finals in Melbourne, Sydney, and Rome. Online gambling sites in Germany offer the odds of 17.00 for her winning.

The runner-up in 2021, Belinda Bencic has even better odds (11.00) to win her 7th title. The Swiss player won in Charleston this April and reached the semi-final in Miami. She didn’t have the best Roland Garros though after losing against Leylah Fernandez in the third round.

While the defending champion, Liudmila Samsonova has the odds of 21.00 on 22Bet to defend her title. It is the first and so far only WTA Tour title for the 23-year-old Russian who reached the fourth round in Indian Wells this year. She will meet either Sabalenka or her compatriot, Veronika Kudermetova in the second round, making it a tough draw for her.
