Sweden Vs Denmark

• Unpredictable performances
• Long term rivalry
• Head to Head

You were always going to be able to bet Sweden Vs Denmark would be the play-off to watch, and whilst Hungary vs Norway was a hugely entertaining spectacle, the first leg of the Scandinavian derby match was far more a game of two halves, as entirely differing football cultures clashed in Stockholm, and whilst the Swedes came out ahead, it was not the convincing win they would have liked, because you can never count the Danes out, as Euro 92 proved.

The rivalry between these two Scandinavian nations is born out of a shared regional history dating back to when men worn horns on their helmets and spent their weekends sailing and pillaging, and whilst sport continues that fine tradition, typically in quite a warmhearted manner, when it comes to the world’s favorite sport there have been a few instances that have makes one bet Sweden vs Denmark will never be just another game of football.

Strangely one of the most formative of recent times would be their participation in Euro 92. Hosted by debut appearance nation Sweden the 1992 tournament would only see these neighbors meet each other on the pitch once, but the 1-0 win Sweden squeezed from the game wasn’t the point, and didn’t end up mattering anyway, no, 1992 was all about Denmark, a team that under normal circumstance wouldn’t have been there, which means the hosts hadn’t bet Sweden vs Denmark would even arise.

Denmark failed to qualify for the 1992 European finals. They’d come in second in their group ahead of Northern Ireland, Austria and the Faroe Islands, but pertinently behind Yugoslavia and thus just weren’t going to Sweden for the finals. Of course no one had been gambling news from the Balkans would change that, however the ghastly hostilities (at that time very much in full swing) meant that a UN Security Council Resolution was about to play it’s part in football history.

Did You Bet On Sweden Vs Denmark In 1992?

United Nations Security Council Resolution 757 condemned the authorities in Yugoslavia for not implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 752 which basically asked everyone to stop shooting at each other and play nice. 757 saw the region become a no-fly zone, stopped import and exports, suspended scientific cooperation and, most importantly, limited participation of Yugoslavia in international sporting events.

No one bet Sweden vs Denmark would happen in 1992 because until 10 days before the tournament Denmark weren’t going to be there, but with just over a week’s notice Denmark were informed that Yugoslavia were banned under UN SCR 757 from playing and thus the Danes would be taking their place. It is perhaps fortunate they didn’t have far to travel, perhaps unfortunate (overall) that they were in the same group as the hosts, but if you liked to bet on sports in Denmark this was going to be epic.

The group stage saw England, France, Sweden and there-by-the-skin-of-someone-else’s-teeth Denmark battle it out for the two places in the next round, and whilst England and France both failed to win any of their three games, Denmark’s win shock against France 2-1 saw them move forward second in the group after hosts Sweden who’d got a 1-1 draw against the French in the first game but won their next two including the one against the Danes.

If you’d bet Sweden vs Denmark would have been perhaps the highlight of the tournament for either team, before the semi-finals most fans would have agreed, but Sweden lost out to Germany in a 3-2 thriller and then the Danes held the Dutch to a 2-2 draw that ended in one of those dramatic penalty shootouts that no one really likes, with Denmark going through to the final 5-4 after Van Basten fluffed his spot-kick condemning the Netherlands to a trip home.

Scandinavian Shocker In Sweden

Kim Vilfort 1992

Kim Vilfort to the rescue at Euro 92

The final of Euro 92 wasn’t going to be anywhere near as interesting to gamble on as a bet Sweden vs Denmark would be worth watching, the Germans pretty much expected to stroll away with it, but the Danes weren’t about to give them such ease of satisfaction and less that 20 minutes into the game John Jensen put the Scandinavians ahead making anyone who’d taken advantage of Danish gambling laws just that little bit more optimistic they’d not chucked their hard earned cash away.

Denmark sealed that win will a goal from Kim Vilfort around ten minutes from time and it was then all over bar the shouting. The team that shouldn’t have been there had not only won the trophy but had done it in the home of their biggest rivals Sweden. Across Gothenburg you could hear the grinding of teeth. This is just one of the many reasons you can always bet Sweden vs Denmark will be a good game, because both sides are capable of surprises, and both sides know it.

Of course these days, whichever way you want to bet Sweden vs Denmark games will turn out, life is a lot simpler for the gambling aficionados what with the internet making sites like ComeOn! Sportsbook never more than a few clicks away with all the latest odds, but gauging their performances ahead of time is never as easy as it seems, and this Euro 2016 qualification process that ended up with them both clinging to qualification doesn’t mean you should count either side out from winning in France next summer.
