A recent bill to legalize sports gambling inside Canadian provinces has officially died after a 155-133 vote inside the House of Commons.

A few weeks ago, we at GamingZion discussed the possibility of a Canadian bill passing that would have allowed provinces and territories to create their own gambling laws. That discussion is now over, as the Canadian House of Commons made Canadian gambling news by rejecting the bill with a vote of 155-133.

The bill to legalize sports gambling, called Bill C-221, was first introduced at the beginning of 2016. The Parliament was divided on the bill, with some claiming it could jeopardize the integrity of sports inside Canada, and could have negative consequences on the youth. Those opposing the bill got their wish, and sports gambling inside Canada remains banned, while Canadian pokersites remain available to play freely.

Bill Rutsey, Chief Executive of the Canadian Gaming Association, expressed his disappointment with the House of Common’s decision, stating “I regret that I don't have better news for Canadians; those who understand what is at risk, and the benefits that could exist by implementing regulation, are frustrated and dissatisfied by the vote.” He continued, “The scales of justice are badly misaligned where this issue is concerned, and I remain baffled that the government of Canada can’t recognise it too.”

The CGA isn’t giving up without a fight

This may not be the end of the effort to pass a bill to legalize sports gambling in Canada. The CGA has maintained that they will continue to push for legalization to help punters from the dangers of gambling on sports in an illegal marketplace.

“The CGA looks forward to working with Members of Parliament to introduce the necessary legislative changes at the earliest opportunity, in order to thwart the illegal and unregulated sports betting market that continues unabated in this country.” They said in an official statement to the press.
