  • Labors won Eden-Monaro in 2019 and 2016
  • No government has won byelection from the opposition in 100 years
  • Liberals’ Fiona Kotvojs narrowly lost against Mike Kelly in 2019

The byelection for the Labor NSW seat of Eden-Monaro in Australia is about to take place in the foreseeable future. As for now, it is a two-horse race between high-profile candidates of Labor and Liberal parties. According to Eden-Monaro byelection odds, a victory for Labors is likely unless Liberals manage a shock upset.

Online sportsbook news sites in Australia have reported that the date for Eden-Monaro byelection will likely be July 04. Both Labors and Liberals are fielding women candidates with strong roots in the electorate. The opposition Labors are favorites at Eden-Monaro byelection odds. Whereas, the government-led coalition between Liberals and The Nationals remain close behind. Thus, a win for the government might be hard to predict, but a woman to win the by-election for the first time in 119 years seems to be closer than ever.

The byelection has been triggered in the NSW seat of Eden-Monaro following the resignation of Labor’s Mike Kelly. The 60-year-old served for a long time as labor Federal MP. He has been facing medical issues for the last six months derived from his overseas service in the army. Thus, it was obvious that sooner or later Kelly will have to step down and pave the way for a successor.

History favors Labor candidate Kristy McBain

The Labor party has picked up a very strong candidate Kristy McBain. She has been already endorsed by the Labor leader Anthony Albanese. McBain has spent eight years as a Bega Valley Shire councilor and she became the mayor in 2016. Just recently McBain stepped aside as the mayor to contest the seat of Eden-Monaro.

If history is anything to go by, she should hold onto the seat. Accordingly, her odds value 1.55 at Bet365 Sportsbook to win the byelection. Simply, no government has won a seat from an opposition at a by-election in Australia in more than 100 years. Besides, Eden-Monaro has been leaning towards the Labor party in recent years, resulting in the election of an opposition member in both 2016 and 2019.

Liberals are backing Fiona Kotvojs

Despite that the odds at online sportsbooks in Australia are against the Coalition, a high-profile candidate just threw her hat into the ring. She is Fiona Kotvojs a farmer and former teacher. In 2019 Kotvojs put up a tough fight against Mike Kelly only to narrowly lose the election. In May 2020, she came back strong winning Liberals endorsement in a decisive way. Kotvojs is best-known for managing a small business and working for several aid organizations in the country.

Kotvojs is campaigning on climate change, bushfires, and creating jobs platform. She was about to be challenged by John Barilaro the National MP. However, he made up his mind and decided not to run. Now it is all about Kotvojs facing McBain with a value of 2.35 at Eden-Monaro byelection odds.
