Fehaid Al-Deehani, a sharpshooter for the Independent Olympic Team, has just made history by winning the gold medal.

In October of 2015, the International Olympic Committee banned Kuwait from taking part in the Olympic Games. This was a major blow to many of the country’s athletes who took pride in representing their nation on the world’s biggest sporting stage. One such athlete was Fehaid Al-Deehani.

Al-Deehani has been a shooter since he was young. His first Olympic experience came at the 2000 Athens Games. There he made gambling news by winning a bronze medal in the double trap shooting event, becoming the first person from Kuwait to ever win an Olympic medal.

He returned to Olympic competition twelve years later at the 2012 Games in London. Here, Al-Deehani proved once again he is one of the best marksmen in the world by winning bronze in the trap event.

Fehaid Al-Deehani was forced to enter the 2016 Olympic Games as an independent athlete, although no one questions where his loyalty lies. The successful shooter is a proud Kuwaiti, and turned down the opportunity to carry the Independent Olympic Flag during the opening ceremony. He is rightfully proud of his achievement, but can’t shake the sadness that comes with having to compete under another flag.

“I am winning the gold medal, the biggest achievement of the Games, without raising my country’s flag. It really hurts me, I can hardly stop my crying.”

How Many Shooting Events are Still Left?

With Ad-Deehani’s gold medal performance now over, there are just two Olympic shooting events left. The women’s skeet bronze medal match and finals will take place today. The Americans are currently leading the betting odds according to Sportsbet.

The favorite to win is Pennsylvania native Morgan Craft, with odds of +108. Behind her is Californian Kimberley Rhode, with current odds of +216, and China’s Meng Wei at 560. It should be a heated event, and each women will need to be on their A-game to bring home the gold medal.
