Online gambling regulations in Germany are likely to change in the near future, as lawmakers in the country agreed to create a new legal framework for internet gaming.

The legality of online gambling in Germany has been questionable for years, and since 2012, German gambling laws stated that only 20 companies would be able to legally operate inside the country.

Recently however, there was a major breakthrough, and German lawmakers have agreed to an interstate plan to revamp the country’s online gambling regulations. All sixteen German States will soon begin working on plans to create a national framework that allows internet sports betting and online casino gambling, as well as remove the 20-company operator limit.

Mathias Dahms, President of the German Betting Association, commented on the news by stating, “For years, the serious sports betting providers have emphasized that a limited limitation of the concessions is constitutional and European. With the introduction of a genuine system of authorization, legal certainty can finally be established.”
