Origins of the World Series of Poker

The history of the World Series of Poker started in the 1970s. The idea to organize a set of poker tournaments for top players came to Benny Binion, who was the owner of Horseshoe Casino. As a result, the very first WSOP tournament took place in 1970 at Binion’s casino.

The first WSOP tournament included five poker variations: Texas Hold ’em, Five-card Stud, Low-ball Draw (Deuce to Seven), Seven-card Stud, and Razz. The winner of the night was Johnny Moss, a Texas professional poker player who received a silver cup and the “World Champion of Poker” title.

However, popularity came to WSOP one year later. In 1971, Benny Binion decided to promote his tournament and implemented the current format of the event: freezeout. In addition, he let the press cover the World Series of Poker. It was even televised by CBS Sports, one of the most popular television networks. This is how the tournament became widely known and recognizable in the US.

Chronology of the WSOP Expansions

The popularity of the World Series of Poker was growing fast. The tournament quickly became the number-one event in the world of poker.
