  • Odds on cannabis referendum are currently available
  • National Party leads in recent opinion polls
  • Labour PM Ardern faces an uncertain future

New Zealanders will be heading to the polls on September 19 to elect a new government. The election campaign is underway and it looks tight between the two largest parties, as per 2020 New Zealand general election odds. However, the National has a good chance to leave opposition and rule again. On the same date, the cannabis referendum will take place.

New Zealanders will head to the polls to elect 120 members to the House of Representatives. As the official date of the election is set on September 19, the campaign race has already kicked off. It looks like the incumbent Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern remains widely popular, but her Labour party is not. Thus, the election results might go either way, as the 2020 New Zealand general election odds show.

It is very hard to give a strong prediction yet, especially that things might dramatically change as the campaign progresses. But, most online sportsbook news in New Zealand expect the National Party to come out as the largest in the parliament. What is more, a referendum on personal cannabis consumption will take place on the same date, with odds currently available on whether or not the bill will pass.

National Party leads in recent polls

The centre-right National Party led by Simon Bridges has spent more time in government than any other party. Most recently National ruled between 2008 – 2017. But, in the last general election, the party dropped from 47.04% to 44.4%, winning 56 seats, yet remaining the largest in the parliament. Subsequently, it failed to retain its presence in the government, and Labour with New Zealand First were able to agree on a coalition.

National is on the rise.

Although many National supporters admire Labour’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Labour is not leading in the opinion polls. Instead, National sits five points head with 46 percent of the Labour Party that slipped to 41%, according to Colmar Brunton poll. Should, the projections come true, National has a greater chance with 2.4 odds at 22BET Sportsbook to return to rule the country.

Labour PM Ardern faces an uncertain future

The 39-year-old charismatic and widely popular Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern led her Labour Party to a massive victory in the 2017 election. However, she faces an uncertain future with a huge possibility to become a one-term Prime Minister. It is largely due to her failure to ambitiously end the housing crisis and social inequality. Thus, she enjoys more support overseas than domestically.

Besides, New Zealand First the party that won 9 seats in 2017 and helped Labour to hold on power is struggling. It might even drop out of the parliament in September. Should that happen, Labour will return to the opposition, despite that 2020 New Zealand general election odds favor Labour to retain the government with a value of 1.62.

Cannabis referendum to take place on the same date

The cannabis referendum will be held at the same time as the 19 September general election. It will be a non-binding referendum. The question will be “Do you support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill?”. And, the people will have to give a yes or no answer. The results of the referendum will likely come out on October 2.

As 1 News Colmar Brunton poll conducted in February shows, the majority of New Zealanders are against the legalization of recreational cannabis. Whereas, 39% are for the legalization. Despite that, the cannabis referendum odds equally value 1.83 for both results. If you wish to place a bet, check first our review about 22BET Sportsbook.
