There is no huge surprise in the latest list of the richest football club owners in 2021. Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour leads with an estimated $30 billion ahead of other top clubs’ owners. 

Last year was a struggle for even the biggest football clubs due to the lack of games, empty stadiums and cancelled tournaments. But the owners of these clubs managed to survive this period relatively well, without any major losses. Their order based on their wealth hasn’t really changed much, we can still find the same names in the top 5. The owners of top Premier League clubs dominate the list but German and Italian members are also present. As billionaires from all around the world love the sport and invests huge amounts of money into their favorite clubs. And even though not everyone is happy about their influence on the sport, fans certainly welcome the most expensive players at their clubs. We find Roman Abramovich in fifth place with $12,5 billion. The Russian-Israeli billionaire bought Chelsea in 2003 and made one of the best teams of the club in Europe. As the Blues have won 16 titles since his arrival including five Premier League, two Europa League and one Champions League titles. Abramovich has made a world-famous brand from Chelsea which is supported all around the world now. He spends millions of pounds every year for new players, offering extremely huge amounts for them. Just last season the club spent more than £200 million on new players, who haven’t really proved their price yet. 4. Dietmar Hopp – Hoffenheim

The next name on the list of the richest football club owners might be surprising for some. As it is Dietmar Hopp, the owner of Bundesliga side Hoffenheim with $18,5 billion. The German software engineer and the founder of SAP SE played at Hoffenheim as a teenager. So when his beloved club was in financial trouble he decided to invest money into it. Thanks to Hopp’s aid the club improved a lot and made it to the Bundesliga in 2008. The businessman spent millions on players and the signing of the team’s manager, Ralf Rangnick. Beside spending €100 million on a new, 30,000-seat stadium. His team still plays in the top division, and currently in 12th place in the table.

3. Andrea Agnelli – Juventus

A member of the famous Italian family, the Agnellis who founded Fiat, Andrea Agnelli has been the chairman of Juventus since 2010. He followed his father’s and grandfather’s steps who had been in this position before. The family has owned the club for several decades now, beside their investments in Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Chrysler. But back to football, under the youngest Agnelli Juventus has become one of the top clubs not only in Italy but in all Europe. The team moved to its new stadium and has won nine Seria A titles in a row. This season their performance might be weaker than usual but they can still finish as a runner-up behind Inter. While Agnelli is not only rich with his $19,1 billion but also a very powerful person. As he is also the chairman of the European Club Association.

2. Dietrich Mateschitz – RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg

The founder and co-owner of Red Bull, Austrian billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz has been the owner of two football clubs. Austrian Red Bull Salzburg and one of the latest German top teams, RB Leipzig. The 40th wealthiest man in the world with $26,9 billion bought SV Austria Salzburg in 2005. While he bought the playing license of SSV Markranstadt in 2009 for a new club, RB Leipzig, The rest is history. Since then Leipzig has become one of the top teams in Germany. They finished as a runner-up in the 2016-17 season while the club also reached the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League. This year Leipzig are still in the race for the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich with 5 points behind the reigning champions. But football is not the only sport interest of Mateschitz as he also owns F1 teams, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso.

1. Sheikh Mansour – Manchester City

Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, or as often called, Sheikh Mansour is the deputy minister of the United Arab Emirates and member of the royal family of Abu Dhabi. But in the world of football he is more known as the owner of the Premier League top side Manchester City. He bought the club in 2008 and invested several millions to the club. Maybe even too much as the club was under investigation for breaking the financial fair play rules.  Still, the club has won four Premier League titles since his ownership. It is the top favorite to win the title again by online gambling sites in the UK. Beside City Mansour also owns other clubs around the world from New York City FC to Mumbai City. But thanks to his huge wealth which is currently $30 billion, he can certainly buy some more if he wants to.
