Reports have surfaced that Russia has banned online gambling site’s social media accounts in an attempt to curb illegal internet betting.

For months, Russia has been attempting to stop illegal online gambling from taking place inside their country. They seem to have gotten one step closer to accomplishing that goal, after Russian gambling news emerged that the government has blocked over 250 internet gambling sites social media accounts.

Russian telecom watchdog Roskomnadzor is responsible for the blocking, and continues to search for gambling social media on a weekly basis. Roskomnadzor has sent official warnings to major social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to suspend gambling site’s accounts the government deems illegal.

Not everyone is convinced of this new strategy, as Nikolai Oganezov, leader of the Bookmakers Self-Regulatory Organization told media he feels it doesn’t tackle the true issue. Oganezov wants to see the government work more with internet gambling companies to find a legal means to operate by implementing sensible tax rates and allowing bookmakers freedom in marketing.

Can you still gamble online in Russia?

Russia’s ban on online gambling makes it illegal for local online gambling sites in Russia to operate. It seems unlikely that any Russian betting websites will become licensed in the country anytime soon, and the news that Russia has banned online gambling sites social media accounts further proves this.

For now, the only way to gamble online in Russia is through a foreign gambling site that accepts Russian players. The government is constantly trying to block the ISP’s from allowing gambling sites, but many still do.
