After Monday night’s draw we got to know all eight pairs in the last 16 of the 2020-21 Champions League season. Some of them have a clear favorite while in others both teams have a chance to go through. Let’s see the favorites from each tie and the odds according to the UCL last 16 betting predictions.
There is only one team outside of the five major European football leagues, FC Porto. All other participating teams come from the Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1. So we can find the well-known teams in the last 16 from Real Madrid to Bayern Munchen, Liverpool to Juventus. And after the draw on Monday we also get to know who will play against which team in the last 16 in February. Bayern seem to be the most lucky one after playing against big returner SS Lazio, but City and Real can’t complain either. BUt as we all know that anything can happen in the competition, and even smaller teams can surprise the big ones.
UCL last 16 betting predictions favor Barcelona to win first game, but PSG to qualify
The top game of the round will be the Barcelona vs PSG derby where Neymar can meet his former teammates. At least the few players who are still at the club like Lionel Messi. Online sportsbooks in Spain favor the Catalans to win the first game with the odds of 2.10. Even though they are struggling this season, currently only in 8th place in the league. They also finished second in their Champions League group after losing their last game 3-0 against Juventus at home. Surely Ronald Koeman will try everything to strengthen his team until the game and at least win the first game.
Last year’s finalists, Paris Saint-Germain have some issues as well. But they managed to defeat Manchester United in their group games when it was crucial. Their latest worry is Neymar’s injury but it seems to be less serious than it first looked. He will be eager to play against his former club while other Parisians would love to take revenge on their 6-1 defeat from 2017. PSG have higher odds (3.10) for winning away. But the team is favored to go through to the next round with the odds of 1.80 in the UCL last 16 betting predictions.
Atletico will face Chelsea while Real play against last year’s surprise team
Atletico Madrid will face Chelsea in the other tough tie with the odds of 2.40 to win their first game. Diego Simeone knocked out Liverpool last year, also playing at home first. So they can easily do it again. What’s more, Atletico are in an even better form, leading La Liga with two games in hand. But they struggled a bit in the group stage and had to win their last game against RB Salzburg to qualify. While Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are getting better and better with their several young talents.
The Blues won their group ahead of Sevilla and stand in 5th place in the Premier League. Now they are favored to qualify to the quarter-finals with the odds of 1.61. Real Madrid are also highly favored by online gambling sites in Spain to knock out last year’s surprise team, Atalanta. The Italians finished behind Liverpool in their group ahead of Ajax. They are not so convincing at home this season but Real have their ups and downs too. Sevilla will host Borussia Dortmund in one of the most balanced ties. Where the Germans have the advantage of playing at home in the 2nd leg. Their odds to go through is 1.53 while Sevilla’s odds are 2.37.
Manchester City can be satisfied with the draw after getting Borussia Monchengladbach as their opponent. With all respect to the Germans it seems an easy job for Pep Guardiola’s team which knocked out Real Madrid last season. Even though they are not doing so great either and are only 9th place in the Premier League. But they won their group confidently with 5 wins and one draw. Meanwhile Gladbach had to wait until the end of Inter’s last game to see if they had qualified to the last 16.
Liverpool might face a much more difficult job against RB Leipzig. As Julian Nagelsmann’s team reached the semi-finals in the summer and kept their great form for the new season. They just knocked out Manchester United with their 3-2 victory over them in the last round. To beat Jurgen Klopp’s side will be a tougher task but Atletico could do it last season. Now the Reds have the odds of 1.28 to go through to the next round.
A Mediterranean derby and a unique tie
FC Porto will host Serie A champions Juventus with less chance of winning. The Portuguese champion finished second in their group behind City after defeating the other teams, Marseille and Olympiacos. But now they will face Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates, who are top favorites to qualify. But fans will remember that Juve were knocked out by another underdog, Lyon last season.
Current UCL champions Bayern Munich will play against Italian side SS Lazio who reached the knockout stage for the first time since 2000. Well, they weren’t too lucky to draw Bayern who are in the top favorites again to win the tournament. But even Hansi Flick’s side showed some weaknesses this season after losing against Hoffenheim and drawing a few times. While Lazio have last season’s Golden Boot winner Ciro Immobile and other great players in the team. Still, their victory against Bayern would be a small miracle as shown by the bookmakers’ odds too.
