Typically, the odds on the Irish Gold Cup aren’t all that attractive. There’s often a sure favorite which steals thunder from the other steeds around it. This year, however, things are different. Whilst Minella Indo is the favorite, there are four other horses right on its shoulder ready to pounce. They all get perfectly acceptable prices at online sportsbook sites in the UK like Bet365, each one worth backing. So let’s look a little deeper at these front-runners’ recent performances, shall we?

The bookies don’t usually price races like this so close. They can usually see which way the wind is blowing and set their odds on the Irish Gold Cup appropriately. However, they will find this year is different. The race hasn’t seen such a great quality field in quite some time. The top five horses are all capable of winning it. This means your bet on the Irish Gold Cup is a little tricky. You can bet on the Irish Gold Cup to be unpredictable anyway, now it’s all way up in the air.

We’ll eschew the longshots. In this sort of race, there are plenty of them, starting at prices around 12/1 at Bet365. Sure, they do mathematically have a chance, it’s just not a very big one. Only a rampant optimist would back them even to place in this field. So instead of such folly, we will have to concentrate on those five front-runners favored by online betting sites in the UK. There must be something to separate them and give us a clue which to back. Let’s take a closer look.

A Plus Tard Looks Very Attractive Despite Price

Delta Work, the horse that won last year, gets 6/1 to do the same again this time round. It’s certainly capable of it, but 2020 didn’t see it run to the best of that ability. Delta Work hasn’t won a race recently and could find this a stretch. Meanwhile A Plus Tard is at 5/1, which are still seriously short odds on a race like this. Three miles and seventeen fences is no easy canter. Many fans will like that price because it won at Leopardstown at the end of December over this distance.

Irish Gold Cup Odds

  • Any Second Now – 50/1
  • Fakir d’Oudairies – 33/1
  • Battleoverdoyen – 20/1
  • Samcro – 20/1
  • The Storyteller – 12/1
  • Castlebawn West – 12/1
  • Presenting Percy – 12/1
  • Delta Work – 6/1
  • A Plus Tard – 5/1
  • Melon – 4/1
  • Kemboy 3/1
  • Minella Indo – 5/2

Can it do so again? Sure. And at that price it’s a great bet on sports in the UK, however, Melon gets a shorter 4/1. This is one of those moments where you start to wonder what the bookies know you don’t. Yes, it won over 2m1f but that’s not the same thing. This is a totally different kettle of fish. Over 3 miles it was two lengths behind A Plus Tard, so what gives? Well that’s those fences coming into play. Perhaps its energy gives it those odds on the Irish Gold Cup.

Perhaps so. Kemboy gets 3/1 after finishing 2nd over this distance recently. You will remember it finished 2nd last year and will look to improve on that result. There’s every chance it will a bet on Kemboy is no bad wager. Of course the less brave will take an each-way option, but on a race like this that’s cold. Meanwhile Minella Indo is current favorite getting 5/2 odds on the Irish Gold Cup at the bookies like Bet365. That puts it only very marginally ahead. It may not be enough.

2021 Irish Gold Cup

  • Date – 7th February, 2021
  • Location – Dublin, Ireland
  • Course – Leopardstown
  • Distance – 3 miles
  • Fences – 17
  • Qualification – 5 y/o+

It won quite comfortably over Brahma Bull at Navan, indeed it’s a while since it lost a three-miler. You have to go back a year to Clonmel. So you can see why the bookies like Bet365 have made it a favorite. Many will take advantage of UK gambling laws to back it winning here. However, there’s still something about a bet on A Plus Tard that is more attractive. Sure other horses get shorter odds on the Irish Gold Cup but at that 5/1 it’s too tempting a wager to dismiss easily.
