This Week in Pictures: May 03 – May 09, 2016

There were plenty of big news stories last week so lets take a look back at some of the most important from the last seven days.

In the US Donald Trump's ambitions to become the next occupant of the White House moved a step closer to reality last week when he won a convincing victory in Indiana garnering 53.3% of the vote in the Republican Primary after which main rival Ted Cruz, who only got 36.7% dropped out of the race, prompting perpetual also-ran John Kasich to also suspend campaigning leaving Donald Trump unopposed and the presumptive nominee going forward into the Republican Convention in Cleveland later this year.

In Alberta, Canada, a massive wildfire centered on the oil sands boomtown of Fort McMurrary caused widespread devastation last week and became the nation's most costly natural disaster in history with some estimates putting the insurance losses at over C$9 billion. The fire, still burning across vast swathes of the region, was kept away from local oil facilities although 50% of the region's crude output has been halted. Thousands of residents of the town now camped out near neighboring towns have been given no estimates by officials on when they can safely return, nor when the fire will be extinguished.

In Greece the parliament passed a package of tax and pensions reforms that makes the country eligible for another EU bail out just in time for a scheduled meeting of the Eurozone's finance ministers. The bail out, a loan of some five billion Euro, was dependent on the measures which are deeply unpopular within the country and as ministers passed the bill in parliament outside demonstrators threw petrol bombs at police. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras defended the vote saying the bill was designed to provide a “sustainable” system with “social justice as its core principle.”

In sports a dramatic final day of the season in the Dutch League saw Ajax and PSV Eindhoven go into their respective games equal on points but with Ajax a nose ahead with a six goal-difference advantage, however the Amsterdam side only got a disappointing 1-1 draw against De Graafschap whilst PSV battered PEC Zwolle 3-1 winning them the league. How will they do in the Champions League next season? The polar research vessel which a public internet poll decided should be called Boaty McBoatface has instead been named the RRS Sir David Attenborough, the announcement an early birthday present for the hugely respected naturalist and television presenter who turned 90 this weekend. In recognition of the poll results, however, a remotely operated sub-sea vehicle aboard the vessel will be named Boaty McBoatface. Sir David Attenborough said that he was “Truly honoured” by the decision. The sub-sea vehicle is yet to comment.
