This Week in Pictures: May 9 – 15, 2017

There was no shortage of massively important news stories last week so we take a moment to look back over some of the biggest that broke around the world.

In the United States President Donald Trump fired the Director of the FBI, James Comey, last week only the second time a President has ever done so, a move the President himself admitted was because James Comey was heading up the investigation into apparent links between Donald Trump's election campaign and the Russians. The reaction to Comey's removal was almost universally negative and US democrats stated they may well boycott the vote to replace the well respected FBI director.

In Korea the future of the relationship between North and South were brought into sharp contrast as the South elected Moon Jae-in as President, a man who believes in dialogue, and the North Koreans tested a new sort of ballistic missile that could well be of threat to the US as well as Japan, China and Russia. Niki Haley US ambassador to the United Nations stated “You first have to get into Kim Jong-Un's head.” Then adding dryly “He's incredibly concerned about anything and everything around him.”

Globally last week a Cyber attack struck at over 150 countries causing chaos in the British National Health Service, the German transport system and numerous other industries, companies and organizations. The ransomware attack encrypted users data and then demanded money for the data to be unlocked again. The most serious and widespread cyber attack to date it is through the tools used to perpetrate the crime were developed by the US National Security Agency and then stolen from them.

In sports Lewis Hamilton managed to hold off Sebastian Vettel to take the win at the Spanish Grand Prix which say Daniel Ricciardo come third. In an exciting race Verstappen and Raikkonen crashed into each other because of Valtteri Bottas who himself was forced to retire when his brakes caught fire, but just who'll go on to lift the championship trophy this year? Meanwhile at a summit in China to discuss a new $124bn investment in transportation and infrastructure Russian President Vladimir Putin was kept waiting by a busy Xi Jinping, and surprised everyone by seating himself at a piano and filling in the time by running off a few soviet era tunes. Playing “Moscow Windows” and the “City On The Free Neva” the choice of tunes was as in keeping with the surroundings as the last time he was seen playing in 2010 at a charity Jazz concert.
