According to the Betting Law of 2019 [L. 37(I)/2019], poker is defined as an online casino game: “online games of chance in which a direct link may be obtained either (a) through terminal machines interlinked with a central computerized system, or (b) with electronic computers through telecommunications as well as with any other appliance which may be used for such a link and includes, inter alia, online roulette, online poker and slot machines, as specified in the present Law”. In this way, the game falls under the prohibition stated in the same law and anyone caught playing on online poker sites in Cyprus will be sentenced to jail time up to 1 year and to a fine that does not exceed €50.000, or both. And the penalties imposed on operators are even harsher, as they will have to serve a maximum of 3 years in prison and/or to pay a fine up to €170.000.
