The first European Darts Championship was held back in 2008 in Germany. The country hosted the event in most years ever since. This time though the tournament will be played in Salzburg, Austria with the total prize fund of £500,000. Both Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen won the event four times. While Peter Wright is the defending champion after defeating James Wade in last year’s final. But none of them played well in the World Grand Prix last week. Unlike the world ranking leader Gerwyn Price who finished as a runner-up in Leicester.

2021 European Darts Championship Predictions Mention The Defending Champion in The Favorites

Gerwyn Price is the top favorite to win the 2021 European Darts Championship with online sportsbooks in Austria offering the odds of 4.00 for his victory. The Welsh reached the final of the 2021 World Grand Prix but lost there against his compatriot, Jonny Clayton. It was still another great performance from the world No1 who has already won four tournaments this season. Though he hasn’t won this event yet, he was the runner-up two years ago, in 2019. Now Price will start against the lowest-ranked player, Ritchie Edhouse in a probably easy game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndg4j0OtraM The defending champion, Peter Wright is likely to have a much more difficult match against Florian Hempel. The 31-year-old German won his PDC Pro Tour card this February and is seeded 18th at the tournament. Of course, bookmakers and the fans still expect Wright to win the tie with the odds of 1.22. The 2020 world champion won six events this season including the 2021 World Matchplay and the 2021 World Cup of Darts along with John Henderson. Last week he was beaten by Rob Cross in the first round. Now his odds to get a much better result and defend his title are 5.00 in the 2021 European Darts Championship predictions.

Four-time Champion Van Gerwen Can Win Again

Michael van Gerwen had a slow start of the season but he seems to be in better form. He finally won his first trophy this season at the 2021 Nordic Darts Masters in September. Although he was also out in the first round last week after his defeat from another Dutch player, Danny Noppert. Now he can aim for another win in one of his favorite events. Which he has already won four times between 2014-2017. Van Gerwen will start against Croatian Boris Krcmar and can meet James Wade in the next round in a trickier game. Especially as Wade has also won this tournament once and finished as a runner-up last year.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEwp_O3pHsA Now online gambling sites in Austria only offer the odds of 23.00 for his win, while van Gerwen’s odds are 5.50. Jose de Sousa can also go all the way after his great form this season. The Portuguese has won three events so far and reached the final of the Premier League Play-Offs. This will be only his second appearance in the European Championship, but his odds are not bad at 11.00 to win the event. We can meet another slightly surprising name in the favorites, Krzysztof Ratajski. The Polish player is having the best season of his career after reaching the quarter-finals in three major events. And also the semi-final in the 2021 World Matchplay. Now his odds to win his first PDC tournament are 21.00 on bet365.
