Among the 24 categories at the every year Oscars, the Best Actor alongside the Best Picture usually takes over the headlines. Thus, we have already started putting up a list of top contenders and of course the 2021 Best Actor predictions for the winner.
Looking back at the history of the Academy Awards, all Best Actor winners ticked one or two boxes. They were over 40 when received Oscars and/or they have won for portraying a real-life fellow. If we take for example Leonardo DiCaprio who won in 2016 for his leading role at “The Revenant”, he ticked the two boxes. He had to wait until 40 to win despite all his previous successes, and he won for portraying Hughe Glass.
Joaquin Phoenix who picked up the Best Actor Oscar for “Joker” in 2020 is 45 years old. One year before Rami Malek won for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury at “Bohemian Rhapsody”. But, what about the 2021 Best Actor predictions, who will likely be on the shortlist? Most of the online gambling sites in the United States suggest Anthony Hopkins and Delroy Lindo will most likely lead the contest.
Anthony Hopkins on a comeback wave
One of the most anticipated films for 2020 is “The Father” starring Anthony Hopkins. The film is about a man who refuses all assistance from his daughter. The 2020 drama has already had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Whereas, it will officially come out later this year.
Anthony Hopkins the Best Actor winner for his role at “The Silence of the Lambs” will likely impress as always. He has been resurging lately by getting Oscar nomination for the Best Supporting Actor at “The Two Popes”. Although the film was not released yet, Hopkins leads with +150 odds at 1xBET Sportsbook.
Delroy Lindo never received a nod
Although he is a celebrated actor known for movies like “Malcolm X” and “Crooklyn”, he never received an Oscar nomination. His recent role at “Da 5 Bloods” has so many positive reviews. Online sportsbook news sites in the United States claim Lindo’s performance is unforgettable. Therefore, he currently sits in the runner-up spot with a value of +650.
“Da 5 Bloods” has already come out on 12 June on Netflix. Lindo plays the role of a traumatized vet returning to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The journey is aimed at searching the remains of a fallen squad leader and a buried treasure of gold. BLM is basically at the forefront of the entire movie, which also might influence Lindo’s award-winning.
Gary Oldman won just two years ago
Just two years ago, Gary Oldman has won his well deserved Oscar for Darkest Hour when he portrayed Winston Churchill. It came after he was only once nominated for his role at “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” in 2012. Now Oldman is back with another intriguing biopic “Mank” to be released in the fall.
The film is about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz who battles with director Orson Welles over screenplay credit for “Citizen Kane in 1941”. Should the film receive positive critiques, Oldman can have a chance with +900, as per 2021 Best Actor predictions. However, the film seems to be very attached to the science of cinematography which might not be appealing to the audience.
Bill Murray might eventually have a chance
It is well-known in Hollywood that comedians can hardly compete for top awards. Take for example last year when everyone thought Adam Sandler deserved to win the Best Actor award. But, he failed to even get a nomination. It is a similar situation for Bill Murray. Murray rose to fame in 1976 and the first time he received a nomination was in 2004 for his role at “Lost in Translation”.
Murray never won, but he might have a slim chance in 2021 with a value of +1000. The film “On the Rocks” is coming out in the fall starring Murray as the larger than life playboy father who reconnects with his daughter. Should he make some noise he might eventually break the glass ceiling.
Will Smith plays the role of Richard Williams
Anyone who loves Venus and Serena Williams will be queuing up to watch “King Richard”. The biopic movie about Serena Williams’ dad – Richard Williams is starring Will Smith. The story is likely very simple about the man who coached his daughters to be winners. Should Smith impress he can also have a chance with +1400 odds. However, keep in mind that there is a huge controversy on the representation. Smith has lighter skin, but he plays the role of Williams who has darker skin. That simple issue might ruin his chances for its sensitivity among African Americans.
