  • Skeleton races are held this weekend, 11-12 February
  • Only two gold medals can be won in the sport
  • German athletes are the favorites for both ahead of the Chinese rivals

Only six medals are awarded in skeleton so we should expect a tight fight for the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s events. The 2022 Olympic skeleton predictions favor the reigning world champion, Christopher Grotheer to win tomorrow. While his compatriots, Tina Hermann and Jacqueline Loelling can compete for the title in the women’s race.

Skeleton is a sliding sport just like luge and bobsleigh with only two gold medals up for grabs. The sport made its Olympic debut back in 1928, then it was back in 1948 before disappearing from the program. It was reintroduced again in 2002 due to its growing popularity. The US and Great Britain have been the most successful nations in the history of the sport with three gold medals but German athletes can dominate the podium this time. In the men’s race the two-time world champion, Christopher Grotheer is the top favorite. The defending champion, South Korean Yun Sungbin also competes in the event but he doesn’t seem to be at the same level now. Elizabeth Yarnold, the two-time Olympic champion has retired since 2018. In her absence, Laura Deas can represent Great Britain. But she is not favored to win, unlike her German and Chinese rivals.

2022 Olympic Skeleton Predictions Highly Favor Grotheer in The Men’s Race

The reigning world champion, Christopher Grotheer leads the men’s skeleton race after two rounds in Beijing. Now online sportsbooks in Germany favor him to win the title and offer the odds of 1.17 for his victory. His lead is significant (0.70 sec), but he can still be caught tomorrow in the next two rounds. The 29-year-old German was only third in this season’s World Cup and in the 2022 European Championship. Bit it looks like Grotheer can achieve the best result of his career now besides his two world titles. His compatriot, Axel Jungk can be his biggest rival who currently stands in second place behind him.

Jungk got two silver medals from previous world championships. While he was also a runner-up in the 2017-18 and the 2021/22 World Cup seasons. Now his odds to win the gold are 9.50 in the 2022 Olympic skeleton predictions. The 2021/22 World Cup winner and six-time world champion Martins Dukurs is only in sixth place after the first day. The two-time Olympic silver medalist has little hope for winning which is represented in his odds of 20.00 as well. He can still get into the podium with better runs.  But he will need to overtake Chinese Wengang Yan who is currently in third place. Getting a medal would be a huge result from the local favorite who has the odds of 11.00 to become the Olympic champion.

German Athletes Can Dominate the Women’s Race

We can find more favorites in the women’s race with similar chances led by the German athletes. Interestingly the youngest one, 21-year-old Hannah Neise has the smallest odds, 5.55 to win the title. In spite of her debut at the Olympics and no major result in the senior field. She is the 2021 junior world champion though who can surprise her more experienced opponents. Like Tina Hermann who is a four-time world champion and the winner of the 2015/16 World Cup. She finished fourth this season but she won the Olympic trial. The 29-year-old was fifth in her last Olympics in Pyeongchang. Now her odds to win the gold are 6.00.

Online gambling sites in Germany also mention the runner-up four years ago, Jacqueline Loelling in the favorites with the odds of 6.50. The three-time World Cup winner also won the 2017 World Championship and finished second last year. Slightly worrying sign though that Loelling was only 10th in the 2021/22 World Cup. Which was won by Dutch Kimberley Bos. The reigning European champion is having a superb season so far and has the odds of 8.00 to crown it with an Olympic gold medal. Chinese fans hope for a good performance from their favorite, Zhao Dan who finished 7th in the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics. She was one of the flagbearers at the opening ceremony. Now the 19-year-old is hoping for a good result on home soil at her Olympic debut.
