The Tennis Integrity Unit is officially beginning an investigation into alleged suspicious betting during the recent US Open.

The TIU is looking into reports of suspicious betting practices taking place at the recent US Open. According to the TIU, a number of suspicious bets were made during the first round women’s singles match between Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky and Russian player Vitalia Diatchenko.

Bacsinszky won the match 6-1, 6-1 against the number 677th ranked Diatchenko. The Swiss player was heavily favored to win by most analysts. She took home a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in doubles, and was expected to advance far in the tournament.

TIU spokeperson Mark Harrison commented on the suspicious betting, telling the Daily News, “We can confirm that we did receive an alert on that match and are looking into it.” He continued, “As with all cases, the TIU will assess, make a judgment and take appropriate action on the alert information received and obtained for the first-round singles match between Vitalia Diatchenko and Timea Bacsinszky.”

The USTA is not convinced any suspicious betting took place

Chris Widmaier, a spokesperson for the United States Tennis Association has stated the US Open organizers are aware of the claims, and are in support of the TIU investigation, even if they don’t necessarily believe the claims. “We have the full faith in the (TIU) investigatory practices. We understand they are following up in their normal operating procedure regarding this matter.”

“That said, we do feel that this is one anomaly that though needs to be taken very seriously and properly investigated, it does not necessarily indicate any nefarious activity.” The investigation is fully in the hands of the TIU now, and it remains to be seen whether any action will be taken that could have an effect on online sportsbooks in the US or abroad.
