Things got a bit better for criminals at the time when Rawlins got its stationary prison in 1901. The first director of the prison was a millionaire Otto Gramm. Gramm basically was using the prisoners as free labor power. He was giving enough food to survive but prisoners were basically starving. By 1911 he was making  250 thousand USD profit on running the jail. The state of Wyoming realized this kind of abuse and appointed a new director for the jail.

The new director was Felix Alston county sheriff. Alston let the prisoners out sometimes to build roads, which was a big improvement indeed. He also made a baseball team that is morally questionable, but still the better option comparing to Gramm. The baseball team consisted of twelve prisoners condemned to death. The deal was simple. As long as they win their sentence is postponed.

The team consisted of Jack Carter, who shot a hermit to death then cut his body up and burnt his remains. William Boyer who stabbed his father to death or George Saban who killed three shepherds during the last murderous sheep raid. Besides them, there were rapists, thieves, and crooks as well.
