  • Southampton suffered two 9-0 defeats in the last two seasons
  • United equalled their previous 9-0 record against Ipswich Town from 1995
  • Even Liverpool suffered a huge defeat this season against Aston Villa
Fans of Premier League side Southampton had a tough game last night when their team suffered their second humiliating defeat in two year’s time. As Manchester United knocked them out with a 9-0 score just like Leicester City did in 2019. These two heavy defeats definitely belong to the worst Premier League defeats in history. Let’s see now other memorable games with big losses.  The English Premier League is probably the toughest league in the world with top clubs and players taking part in it. Here every round is a new battle where even the smallest teams can surprise the big ones. Or teams in good form can suffer surprising defeats. It is even more true about this season when the hectic schedule and the high numbers of injuries and illnesses have taken their toll on the teams. And they sometimes caused amazing results, like Aston Villa’s 7-2 victory over defending champions Liverpool. But it’s not the first time that a reigning champion has suffered a big defeat. While in other cases they won with such differences against minor rivals as we can see in the following examples.

Southampton’s losses in the worst Premier League defeats in history

It must be difficult to be a Southampton fan today after witnessing the club’s second huge defeat in a short time. They had their first black day last season, when Leicester City won 9-0 against them. The Saints were reduced to 10 men in the 12th minute after Ryan Bertrand was given a red card. The score was already 1-0 then soon followed by more Leicester goals. Brendan Rogers’ team was unstoppable with Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both scoring a hat-trick. With their victory Leicester set up a new record for the largest away win. But this season Southampton seemed to be in a much stronger team after winning their first five games out of eight. They also managed to win 1-0 against the champions, Liverpool just four weeks ago. But last night the team collapsed again in very similar circumstances. This time Swiss youngster Alexandre Jankewitz lasted only two minutes after his stupid foul. With 10 men the Saints just couldn’t cope with Manchester United, who scored 4 goals in the first and another 5 in the second half. The Red Devils equaled their own previous record, a 9-0 win against Ipswich Town from 1995. Both Soton games belong to the worst defeats in sports.

Who are you betting on?

The first game with the biggest winning margin

In 1995 the Premier League looked quite different from today’s league with a dominating Manchester United team. Under the lead of Sir Alex Ferguson the team was chasing their third title with legendary players, like Andy Cole, Roy Keane and 21-year-old Ryan Giggs in the squad. While their opponent, Ipswich Town was second from the bottom and fought against relegation. In the last meeting of the two teams Ipswich still managed to defeat United 3-2 at home. But at Old Trafford the guests didn’t have any chance. Roy Keane started the goals in the 15th minute and his teammates followed him shortly. Cole scored five goals in the game and became the first player to do so in the Premier League. Ipswich Town’s defense was apparently one of the slowest in history, with an average age of 32. Poor goalkeeper, Craig Forrest surely had his worst match, after conceding 9 goals at the end. The team was relegated at the end of the season to the Championship while United finished second behind Blackburn. A result which they can repeat again this season according to online sportsbooks in the UK.

Wigan and their two heavy defeats

Certainly Southampton are not the only team suffering huge defeats multiple times. We have two Wigan losses next in the worst Premier League defeats in history. The first came in 2009, when they lost 9-1 against Tottenham Hotspurs. The Londoners were only leading 1-0 at half time with the header of Peter Crouch but his teammates produced 8 in the second half. With Jermain Defoe scoring five goals alone. At least Wigan could score a consolation goal in the 57th minute. Unlike in their other huge defeat against Chelsea in the following year where they lost 8-0. The Blues under Carlo Ancelotti’s management were playing great again in the 2009-2010 season and won the title with their last round’s victory against Wigan. They did it with a style after scoring eight goals to Roberto Martinez’s side. Chelsea were predicted to score many goals this season too. And were mentioned in the favorites by online gambling sites in the UK. Well, they are only in 7th place right now, 11 points behind the leaders, Manchester City. At the same time Wigan are fighting against relegation again in League One.

Most surprising losses

A defeat can be shocking without a huge margin like the ones we could witness this season. As Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, one of the favorites to win the title again were beaten 7-2 by Aston Villa last October. It  was the first time that the defending champions conceded seven goals since 1953. And also the heaviest Pool defeat since losing to Tottenham 7-2 in 1963. Fans could say that the team has been suffering with multiple injuries but in this game most of their key players were still playing. So to suffer such a huge defeat from the Birmingham side was shocking for most people. Just like Manchester United’s 6-1 loss against Tottenham on the same day. Now Solskjaer’s team is in top form and chasing the leaders, but in the beginning of the season they were still struggling. Meanwhile Jose Mourinho’s side got on a great start and made the most of this game after United was reduced to 10 men. Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min scored twice and thrashed the Special One’s former club. They couldn’t continue in such form for long though as Spurs are only in 6th place at the moment.
